Question

Can't render! Memory spikes to 100% and it fails. But Preferences doesn't open to change RAM usage

I have a few videos I need to publish for my job. They are all less than 2 minutes. But once they're in Media Encoder, it renders painfully slowly, and after 10 minutes or so, memory spikes to 100% and it fails. I have 32gb of memory and think getting more is overkill. My GPU has 8gb of dedicated memory too.

I try to open Preferences but I get a forever spinning wheel before the program fades to white and I need to force close it.

I have tried restarting computer (obviously), reinstalling the program, purging memory from Edit menu, deleting temporary files, and using Creative Cloud's uninstaller program to completely wipe everything Adobe and start fresh. I had hoped that starting a fresh install would maybe reset whatever settings I have under Preferences, which I can't even see.

Computer Specs

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER

AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6-core

32 GB RAM

My boss is willing to upgrade some parts of my PC so these videos I worked hard on can publish, but I feel like my computer is fine? It's just that AE is spiking to 100% instead of being limited. And I can't open Preferences to check it out.

Would love some help! Thank you.

Hi Lauren:

Regarding "My boss is willing to upgrade some parts of my PC so these videos I worked hard on can publish, but I feel like my computer is fine? It's just that AE is spiking to 100% instead of being limited. And I can't open Preferences to check it out."

An AMD Ryzen 5 shoud get the work done, but it's not going to be fast.

Visit the Multi-Frame Rendering is here! (AKA The multithreading you’ve been asking for) Adobe Community Support thread and then download and run the After Effects benchmark project.  The link is under "Start Testing!".  Then compare your results with what others have posted.  You should then have a good idea of whether it's worth upgrading or not and what to upgrade to.  I'm guessing it will take your computer somewhere between 18 and 23 minutes.  If you buy a new system, run the benchmark project right away.  Assuming you have a return window, that's the time make sure your exports are taking the time that you're hoping for.

Hi LaurenID,

I'm sorry to hear about your issue.

First, please check the version of the GPU driver installed on your computer. If it's not up to date, try updating it. If it doesn't work, it would be helpful if you could share a dump file with us so we can investigate further. Here's how to obtain the dump file:

  1. Open After Effects and go to Preferences.
  2. While After Effects is not responding, open the Windows Task Manager, find the After Effects process, and expand it.
  3. Right-click Adobe After Effects 2023 and select "Create dump file."
  4. The process will take a few seconds to create the file and then provide an option to open the file's location.

Please note that dump files can be quite large. You can upload the file to a cloud storage service and share a download link with us.

We look forward to your response.

Thanks,

Nishu

Hi Nishu,

Sorry for the delay! I hope you're still around. I accidentally had notifications turned off for this post.

I've had luck rendering videos in After Effects directly, not Media Encoder. But I still really need to access Preferences. There is a script I'm trying to run and I can't grant it Write permissions because I can't open Preferences. I left AE running all night while unresponsive to see if the panel would come up, but it didn't.

Here is my dump file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/k71f5zp5l4ce0hw/AfterFX.DMP?dl=0

Thank you for your help!

Thanks for sharing the dump file. I'll pass it along to our developers and update you as soon as we have some news. In the meantime, would you mind updating After Effects to the latest version (23.4) and see if the issue persists?

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Nishu

Is the problem when rendering INSIDE After Effects, or INSIDE Media Encoder rendering an After Effects project?

Am I blind? Can't see an edit button!

Forgot to mention that my AE version is 23.3.

I am using 2 plugins: AEJuice and Animation Composer 3.
