Change the text in a composition that is used multiple times

Hello,

I am still a beginner in After Effects and can not find a solution to a problem. So I hope for help here.

I have created a composition with an animated background and a text. I would like to use this composition in several other compositions. The background and the animation should always be the same but the text should be different each time. But as soon as I change the text, it is also changed in all other compositions. Can I prevent this somehow?

Thanks in advance

Gabi

Correct answer Rick Gerard

If you duplicate a composition in the Project Panel you make a unique copy. If your text layer is pre-composed it becomes a nested composition so you'll have to find that in the Project Panel and duplicate it there, then replace the original nested comp with the duplicate.

An alternative to Rick's solution, you may also copy the 'original' Text Layer and paste it into another Composition. This way, each Text Layer is independent of the other. A more sophisticated way is to use Master Properties but you'll need to be a bit more nuanced with AE's mechanics and workflows to get it to work elegantly - this is how you should be working with multiple instances of a layer/comp in Adobe After Effects - something you should look at doing once you're more comfortable with AE.
