Why is it called Fractal Noise?

I assume Noise is used because it's supposed to make a noisy texture and have many different contrasting parts. To be honest, it could probably have a better name but it makes sense to me.

Noise is not sound, is noise. So, a fractal noise generator will use noise as input for an algorithm of distribution in space and modulated by a modifier. It have a stack of noise, with octaves.. Just google about perlin noise, this is ancient math stuff, not specific software related.
