Did not work for me. Perhaps I do not understand. I placed and in and out marker, I thought, but the marker panel only shows one marker, not 2. There is a gray area above the timeline between the in and out marker I placed but it has no effect on rendering

What the original solution was describing was using the work area bar to limit the export (it also controls preview range). When you export it is teh work area that is the default area that is rendered.

This is a video by Mike Murphy on setting the work area bar: https://youtu.be/QxXevteeumg?si=PcVSHTtIRTfJfIWt

This was a AI generated description that Adobe's site prompted when I was looking for information to add to this post:

Understanding the Work Area in After Effects

In Adobe After Effects, the work area defines the portion of your composition that will be rendered and previewed. You can set the beginning and end of the work area to focus on specific sections of your project. Here are some key points about the work area:

  1. Setting the Work Area: You can set the beginning or end of the work area to the current time by pressing B (for beginning) or N (for end).
  2. Adjusting the Work Area: To set the work area to the duration of selected layers, or to the entire composition duration if no layers are selected, use Ctrl + Alt + B (Windows) or Command + Option + B (macOS).
  3. Trimming the Composition: You can trim the composition to the work area by using Ctrl + Shift + X (Windows) or Command + Shift + X (macOS).
  4. Previewing: The work area is particularly useful for previewing specific sections of your animation or effects without rendering the entire composition.

By effectively using the work area, you can streamline your workflow and focus on the parts of your project that need the most attention.
