Wel the titel says it all i guess: Is there a way to only render part of the timeline?
Yes. Place marker and use keyboard shortcuts "B" to set the inpoint and "N" to set the outpoint on your timeline. good luck

Did not work for me. Perhaps I do not understand. I placed and in and out marker, I thought, but the marker panel only shows one marker, not 2. There is a gray area above the timeline between the in and out marker I placed but it has no effect on rendering

Ok, found that in the Render setup page there is a little drop down menu which allows you to select entire project or in and out, work area and custom. Selected in and out and success. only that portion was rendered

What the original solution was describing was using the work area bar to limit the export (it also controls preview range). When you export it is teh work area that is the default area that is rendered.
This is a video by Mike Murphy on setting the work area bar: https://youtu.be/QxXevteeumg?si=PcVSHTtIRTfJfIWt
