Low memory warning banner in After Effects 22.6

Hello, I'm having problems, something related to RAM because a notification appears saying that, but I've already allocated all the RAM of the MAC to the after and it still appears, I can't play the preview

I've tried clearing cache, changing the renderer, but nothing works

Can someone help me?

My After Effects file will only play 1 frame during preview playbacks for some odd reason. And after I press stop because it's annoying, the video screen gives a warning prompt telling me it's a memory issue. Well, I watched a few YouTube tutorials and followed along a few articles on the matter as to how I can go about fixing the memory issue in my AfterEffects file. But the problem still exists. Can you help please?

You have not provided any info about your system, your preview settings, cache and multiframe render settings, hardware acceleration and so on, so we can't really tell you much. Cropped screenshots don't help, either, when we can't see the relevant timeline bits with layer switches and what layers are there. You need to be more specific and givce us something to work with.

I had the same Low Memory Warning Banner using AE 22.6.0. MacBook Pro 2016, i7, 16GB RAM, Monterey.

“Low memory warning. RAM use has been extended for previews. Adjust RAM settings in Preferences > Memory & Performance.”

I tried adjusting all the RAM and memory settings in the main preferences panel. With no luck.

I then UNCHECKED  “Cache Frames When Idle”

That has sorted it for me. I have a MacBook 2016 and I doubt it is capable of constantly generating previews. Nor do I want it to.

Composition > Preview > Cache Frames When Idle

Hi all,

Update (09/26):

The latest version of After Effects Beta v23.0.0x59 includes a fix for this issue. Can you install the Beta and verify if it is working as expected for you?

Please note that the Beta version is a separate install and won't affect the current version of After Effects on your machine. You CAN install the Beta and the stable (non-Beta) versions parallelly.

The Beta version can be installed from the CC desktop app.

Installing v23.0 beta did not solve this problem for me.

2021 MacBook Pro M1 Pro 16GB (4GB reserved)

I tried cleaning cache and database. Trashed preferences. Used it in multiple projects, none of them had any very slow layers. A few mp4 files that came up as "Less than 500ms" in the profiler. (Not every comp or project had mp4 files, though. That's not it.) Never had more than 7 or 8 layers at a time. Pretty basic projects at 1920x1080, 29.97fps. Nothing an M1 shouldn't be able to handle easily.

FWIW... I had this problem when I updated to 22.5 also. Went back to 22.4, no problems. Tried 22.6 yesterday. Same Low Memory warning. Back to 22.4 again now and no more problems.

Hi @cmcilwain4450

Thanks for letting me know.

Can you confirm the beta build number? Is it v23.0.0x59?

In After Effects 22.5, a change was made to how After Effects utilizes and releases memory. Reverting to After Effects 22.4 works because it returns to the previous behavior, which was erratic in certain situations.

Rameez

Hi all,

Update (09/15):

The After Effects team is investigating this issue; they think it might be caused by a combination of effects. Some effects might not be releasing memory efficiently, causing the low memory warning banner to come up.

The team has also identified a workaround:

1. Launch After Effects. If you're already using After Effects, you must relaunch it.

2. Go to File > Project Settings > Video Rendering and Effects

Alternatively, you can bring up this window by clicking the rocket icon in the Project panel.

3. Choose "Mercury Software Only" to disable GPU Acceleration.

Please follow these steps and let us know if you experience any improvement in this behavior.

Additionally, can you generate a report (File > Dependencies > Collect Files > Generate Report Only) and post it here so we can see what effects may be used in the projects?

I appreciate your patience.

Thanks,

Rameez

Mercury Software Only did not worked for me.
MacBook Air M1 2020
Big Sur 11.6.8

16GB RAM (4GB RAM reserved...)
AE 22.6
Only working with Shape Layers (with around 40 shapes per layer) only one Shape Layer at a time, one MP3 audio layer and one Video layer (used to be a MP4 file but I changed it to ProRes to check if that was the issue with no difference on the outcome).
No effects used on any layer or comp what so ever.

Also, this is the only Project where I have this problem.
I started and finished another project (in parallel with the faulty one) with PSD Layers and MP3 audio some expressions (DUIK and others), Puppet Pins etc. and everything worked great.

After Effects, this new version is really irritating. It's working very slow,  Sometime it shows a "low memory warning" message when I am trying to preview my comp. I am not using any plugins and I have 32GB of RAM.  I even tried just importing a normal mp4 video and previewing that it showed "low memory warning" without any edit I rendered that video it took hours.

Hi All, I had the same problems. AE just did not seem to use the RAM I had while I saw Photoshop using a lot more. What helped me is unchecking the option "Reduce cache size when system is low on memory". It didn't work right away but after some restarts I now don't get de orange warning anymore.

Hope this helps.

Hi I have a fairly new MacBook Pro 202, running Monterey (macOS 12.5.1) with Apple M1 Max chip and 64GB Ram. I would think one of the fastest thing out there.

But it After Effects has never run really smoothly on it. I keep having preview problems. In 22.5 I had the famous 5 frame preview issue and now I keep getting this warning. low memory warning. Ram has been extended for previews.

How can I get better performance?

I now have disk cache enable in preferences with a max of 500GB, I empty it regularly but it is never full. It is set in my library on my hard drive. As well as Conformed media cache.

Installed ram is 64GB and I have 12 GB reserved for other applications, so 52GB for AE.

Reduce cache size when system is low on memory is on. When I look at memory usage details it says it only uses 3.78 GB. And that is confirmed in mu Activity monitor from apple uitlities.  Enable multiframe rendering is off. No other majot applictions (just mail, calander and safari) are running.

It seems to me AE is not using the power of my system. Is that correct?

How can I change this?

Any help much appreciated!

preview is broken in versions 22.5 and 22.6

if you revert back to version 22.4 previewing will work fine

Hi all,

I have reported this behavior to the After Effects team. So far, it seems that this is mostly reported by users who have Mac M1 computers. To investigate this further, we need the After Effects log file from your computer. Please follow these steps to obtain the log file:

  1. Launch After Effects and enable logging under Help > Enable Logging.
  2. Work on your project normally until you see the low-memory warning banner.
  3. After you see the banner, go to Help > Reveal Logging File. After Effects will reveal two directories on your machine — The "SentryIO-db" folder and the "After Effects Log-last.txt".
  4. Grab the "After Effects Log-last.txt" file and share that in this thread.

Thanks,

Rameez

Hi,

I still get this warning over and over again:

I am not really doing hard task and actually my macbook should handle it. My review caches only a few frames and repeats them forever.

What I try so far:

- emtpying disk cache (on external drive)

- reducing ram reserved for memory application

- reinstalling AE

these solution works for 5 minutes, then the warning appears again. I've read about this problem many times but havent seen a solution yet.

Great users on Adobe Support Community, I need a solution!

Hey aichanq60554787,

Sorry about the issue. Are you using any third-party plugins? How much RAM is installed in your system? When you go to the activity monitor, are Adobe apps using the entire amount of allotted RAM? Also, please refer to this link and let us know if the troubleshooting steps help.

Thanks,

Ishan
