Moving & Not moving

Question

This is a online tutorial by Adobe Ae. Tutorial shows how to place a text "05" on the runway. When I replicate this work number of times I got two different result:

1. Text 05 moves on the runway when moving the playhead.

2. Text 05 does not moves on the runway when moving the playhead.

I have attached that two videos about this with zoom in detail about Position & Orientation. Please explain the reason for this.

Yes, those are tracking points. You can drag around many points to select them. You don't have to Shift + click on all the points you want to include. I would turn on Detailed Analysis and then select a lot more points.

I would also add a solid and then add the Grid effect to the solid so you can judge how well the shot tracks. If your tracking error is small and you select the right points, you should get a good solid track. One point not on the same plane (the runway) will cause the layer to appear to move because it will be somewhere above the tarmac.

The moving text is dong so because you have not selected tracking points that are all on the runway surface. If you rely on After Effects to automatically select 3 points, they may not be on the same surface. I usually drag a selection around many points and make sure that the target looks correct.

I rarely run a Camera Track without creating a Solid and a Camera right after setting the Origin and Ground Plane. I always use the same trackers to set the Origin and Ground Plane and the reference solid and camera. I also add the Grid effect to the Solid so that I could check the track to make sure that it is accurate. I usually leave the layer in the comp but set it to a Guide layer so that it doesn't render. This gives me a good starting point for adding other 3D layers to the comp. You can always Shift + Parent another 3D layer to snap it to the same position and orientation as the reference origin layer. I also almost always select Detailed Analysis when I run Camera Tracking. It almost always gives a more accurate track.

That is a pretty good tutorial, but it did leave out a few crucial details that would help you analyze different types of shots. I hope this clears things up for you.
