No second layer of text in AE

I have this un-before seen issue with After Effects.  The first line of text appears perfectly normal, but try to add text on a second layer and it is invisible, and it will not render.  I can see the bounding box of the text, I can highlight the invisible text, and I can see the layer in the layers panel in the lower left, but not on the canvas.  I've tried rebooting, tried uninstalling AE and re-installing. I've right-clicked on the paragraph panel and character panel to reset the character.  If I change the order of the layers, it mashes the text of both layers on top of each other making it illegible. If I try to resize the invisible text it crashes AE.  I uninstalled AE 16.0.1 and installed AE 15, (2018) and it worked fine.  But reinstall AE 16.0.1 and the same issue reappears.  Nothing works and I do not believe its a problem on my computer .  I'm on a Mac Pro running OS 10.14.3  with 64 GB of memory, and 3.5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5 and AE 16.0.1

This seems like a very fundamental bug that needs a fix and fast.  AE worked fine last week, now this.  I'd love some help on this.

Ah HA!!

As soon as I set the first layer of text to 99% opacity, the other two text layers appeared!  When I move the first layer of text back to 100% opacity the second and third layers disappear again.  Same thing happens when I change from Open CL to Metal, to Mercury Software only.  It's still buggy, but at least I have a workaround.  I'm going to mark this question as answered, but the fact that moving from 100% opacity to 99% opacity is the fix seems wonky.  Thank you SOOO much for your attention.  I don't think I would have hit upon this as a workaround without your help.

I really appreciate you helping me on this... but I'm stumped.

I tried Open CL, Metal and Mercury Software only no effect.  I moved the playhead to the 4 second mark and checked the opacity, it was at 100%

Let me keep checking possibilities if I see something useful I'll let you know.

Here is the full screenshot.  It's big purple text on a pale gray background.  3 layers of text.  Only one layer visible. Caps lock is not on as text is lower case.

- As it is, put the playhead in the second 02s.

- Check the opacity that should be 100%.

And if it still does not works, try changing the GPU acceleration in the menu File / Project Settings... Choose another one and press OK.

Show us with a screenshot the entire interface including the Text panel, but first make sure of the following:

If the CapsLock key is not active.

That the text is not the same color as the background.

That the text size is adequate.
