"Add Keyframe" Shortcut not working

Hi. Just upgraded from an old computer to a new one and reinstalled After Effects (apparently jumping from version 16.1 to 23.5).

 

As I was readjusting my old shortcuts, I noticed that the extremely basic "Add Keyframe", which I usually have assigned to just "X", is not working at all. No matter what I assign to it, it will not add a new keyframe when a layer or a layer's property such as "position" or "opacity" are selected.

 

I'm hoping there's an easy and obvious solution to this that I'm missing. Being able to add keyframes with the click of a single key is integral to my workflow and I cannot imagine working without it.

That's odd; it's working on my end. Do you have the property selected when you enter the keyboard shortcut? If so, try creating a new custom key set by saving a copy of the default preset.

I got it working. For some reason two other shortcuts had been assigned to the "X" key, including "scroll layer to top". These other hotkeys were not there the last two times I opened the program: I remember checking to make sure X was clear and also when I tried pressing X neither of those phantom hotkeys triggered. I feel like I would've noticed "scroll layer to top" happening every time I pressed the button.

Either way, deleting these newly-visable hotkeys and re-assigning X to just "add new keyframe" seemed to work. Not sure why the the other hotkeys weren't appearing before and why assigning other single keys and other modified keys to the "Add new keyframe" command didn't seem to do anything. Maybe it was just some kind of fresh installation glitch?

Hey JelloApocalypse,

I'm sorry to hear about this. Could you try adding a modifier key to your keyboard shortcut (Instead of using X, try setting the shortcut to Shift + X) and let us know if that works?

I added two modifiers, Shift + X and Alt + X. Neither worked.
