In this video, I dive into how to create cinematic, documentary-style spacecraft shots in After Effects, inspired by Apollo 13, Europa Report, and For All Mankind.

We’ll explore camera movement, light bloom, starfield backgrounds, and lens defects. My goal is to combing lots of small tricks into make the 3D render feel real. Along the way, I’ll also share tips, failed experiments, and resources like Jarle’s handheld presets.

Thanks for this tutorial! The breakdown of how to achieve those cinematic space visuals in After Effects is really helpful. I especially liked the part about using subtle bloom and camera shake to enhance the scale and atmosphere—it’s such a simple trick that makes a huge difference. The lens flare and light wrap sections also stood out for me, as they added a level of realism I often struggle with in space scenes. Looking forward to trying out these techniques in my next project and seeing how they improve the overall look.
