Using the paintbrush tool on a text layer

Hello!

I'm trying to apply an effect of erasing a word. I know that you have to do this on the actual layer and not in the composition. I want to apply paint to the alpha layer so it looks like the word is being erased. However, when I double click on my text layer, it is not opening up the text layer in the layer panel. So I'm not actually viewing the layer itself. I tried reseting my workspace back to standard, but still I cannot get into the layer panel. I tried making a solid shape layer and double clicking on that and I was able to access the paint tool, but I want to know how to do this with a text layer!

Would love any help! I'm using Adobe After Effects CC 2017.2

Paint tools only operate on rasterized layers. You have to pre-compose the text and paint on the resulting composition-based layer.

Pre-compose your text and then right click on the nested comp and select open layer. You cannot directly open a text layer in the layer panel.
