I used write-on yesterday and it showd me a path.  I updated and it no longer does.  all other paths display, list not the write on effect, essentially making it a usless effect.  I've seen this question multipletimes over the past 4 years but ahain it worked yesterday before the update.  I've checked all pathe wiel options under view and under preferences.  I've rtead all posts.  nothing works. Anybody have a suggestion?

In the future, please embed your screenshots using the toolbar.

You are trying to view an Effect motion path in the Composition Panel. The only motion path that will show up in the Composition Panel is the Layer/Position motion path. The workflow is and has always been to open the layer in the Layer Panel, make sure that the Effect is selected in Effects Control Panel or the Timeline. This will turn on the Render Options for that Effect. Anchor Point, Mask Path, and all effects that have position properties like write on are also listed in the If "Show Layer Controls" is on in the View menu you will be able to view and edit the motion path for any effect or property with position properties in the layer. You can also use the View menu at the bottom of the Layer panel will let you choose effects, masks, or the Anchor Point, and then Render that selection in the panel so it can be edited.

Your screenshot clearly shows that you have the wrong panel open.
