Playhead doesn't return to start position if there's a selection.

Enthusiast ,
Oct 20, 2017 Oct 20, 2017

Hi all.

I have the "Return playhead to start position on first stop" activated, and it works as expected during normal playback.

However, if I make a selection and play it, the playhead does not return to the starting point upon stopping. It stops at the end of the selection, but goes on its merry way AFTER the selection when you play again. If there's any time you want to repeat playback, it's when you have a selection!

Looping is not a suitable workaround, because in many cases you want to hear what an edit sounds like from start to stop.

Is this a Mac-specific bug, or does it happen on Windows too?

Thanks!

Can't believe this critical feature has been removed

It was never purposely removed but got caught up as a bug in some of the code rewritten for CC2018. I don't know which version of Audition you are using but this bug has been fixed in the latest v.11.0.1.49 release. So make sure that your Audition CC2018 is up to date.

There are several more selectable options in Preferences/Playback. Turning some of those on or off or a combination may produce the type of playback that you would prefer.

Thanks. Unfortunately, there does not appear to be one that resolves this. Does it behave the same way on Windows?

Yes, after further experimentation, I can confirm that the same happens on a Windows machine. It seems that the Stop at end of Selection cancels the Play return position. However with the Stop at end of Selection option turned off obviously playback doesn't stop at the end of the selection and carries on. But at least Stop and Play again does move the Playhead back to the start of the selection where it started from previously. I wouldn't normally notice since I usually have Loop playback turned on.

So I am not really sure if this is a Bug or a Feature. But maybe it should be yet another option.

I suspect that this is an unfortunate side effect of altering the center-screen scrolling option - yes, it's been altered. And I'd put it down as an 'undocumented feature'...

Thanks for the responses, guys.

Apparently this used to work: Re: I want to be able to play a selection and then play it again (CS 5.5)

@Mobius Strip

Funny thing. I just filed this exact same thing as a Bug Report (which is what it is). FWIW I even made a video earlier on today, before seeing your post on here. Audition CC 2018 Playback Start Position - YouTube

Great, hced.

I considered making a video too, but figured it was easily reproducible so I didn't take the time. Good job for doing so.

By the way, what screen-capture utility did you use? I use QuickTime player, but to add captions I'd need to pull it into an editing app. Just wondering if you have one that lets you add captions conveniently.

I heard that this same bug was in CC2017 and wasn't corrected. I haven't tried CC2017. I hope Adobe will fix this issue, since I use it a lot.

No it doesn't happen in Audition CC2017. It is new in CC2018.

I have the same issue, RyClark, and it is really slowing down my workflow! Has Adobe responded to this problem yet?

I create a time selection, press play to hear it, and I want the cursor to return to the start of the selection.

See the last post here Multitrack Export Mixdown in Audtion CC 2018 build 11.0.0.199 . If it is causing you problems at the moment the advice is to revert to CC2017, which can be done from the Creative Cloud app.

I am also really frustrated by this bug, as it is one feature I use a LOT while editing and trimming short samples in edit view.

It also seems that the "skip section" does not work as well. It skips the selected section, but only plays s short fraction (maybe 200ms) before and after the selection.

Reverting to 2017 is not really an option due to the many bugs I have experienced on that version when doing batch processing, which I am also quite dependant on.

I am on a Windows PC.

The simplest way to achieve a longer section to play before and after a marked section is, having marked the section, move the playhead/cursor as far before the section as you wish to hear, Audition will then play that section and the equivalent length after the marked section and it will remember your choice for each subsequent use of a marked section.

Cool. I never even knew about the "skip section" option. And remembering the user-specified range around the selection is good attention to detail, sorely lacking in other CC apps (especially Photoshop).

+1 for Audition

Can't believe this critical feature has been removed. I can't go back to 2017 because of the OS incompatibility, so I'm stuck not being able to listen to a selection over and over quickly.  Very painful. Audition has been great since the demise of Peak, but this is a deal-breaker for me. Doesn't sound like any real effort is being put into fixing this at Abode; time to start looking for a different editor i guess.  Bummer.

Really glad they fixed this. GJ, Audition team.

Now, PLEASE let us double-click to select between markers somehow!  This is a glaring and significant impediment to using Audition.

If you want to place the Playhead inside an already selected portion of the audio without deselecting it you have to click on the Timeline above the waveform. Then you can play from that point and the Playhead will return to that point when you Stop or the cursor reaches the end of the selection, provided that return Playhead to Start position on Stop is activated.

Mobius -- Double-click on the first marker to select contents between markers. (However, it would be nice to double-click anywhere between the beginning/end markers to select all within!)

Thanks, dnuff, but that doesn't work as far as I can tell.

Correction: That doesn't work with regular markers.  If you've set up a range, clicking on either marker does select the range. But (in addition to the obvious question of why you can't click on the waveform) it's baffling that you can't click anywhere in that timebar area between the markers to select the range.  You have to click exactly on the tiny marker triangles and nowhere else.

This is a limited workaround, but it requires you to set up everything as a range instead of simply dividing up your file by dropping markers.

Please fix this, Adobe.

Mobius -- If you created the Markers using a Selection (selecting audio and THEN creating your marker), double-clicking on the first marker will select all between. However, if you create a marker at the beginning of audio data, moved the cursor to the end of the audio data, and then create another marker, then you're right -- it won't work. Sorry.

I'm with you 100% on the request for audio selection!
