Hello,
I have a strange problem in Adobe Bridge (Version 14.1.1.274 on Windows 11) that I cannot seem to fix on my own:
- I have a bunch of JPG-images that have been processed in Photoshop, only a few of them have been processed using the "Generative Fill" tool in Photoshop
- after finishing, I select all JPG-files , right click on "file info" and append my saved metadata template from the template folder
- The metadata goes directly to the IPTC fields within the JPG files, BUT: for the few images that have been processed with "generative fill" in PS, Adobe Bridge keeps generating a XMP sidecar file
- When delete the XMP sidecar file and open the affected JPG in Photoshop and add the metadata template there via "File Info", the behaviour is as expected and PS stores the information directly in the JPG (without creating an XMP file).
How can I stop Adobe Bridge from creating these XMP files?

Have you tried the alternative route of going to Bridge>Tools>Append (or Replace) Metadata and choosing your template?
It would be interesting to see if this works "normally" i.e. without xmp generation. I use this route myself frequently and have never encountered xmp files this way.
Another method to consider which I find the most effective: You can add metadata using your template when you first download files from your camera using the Photo Downloader within Bridge before you ever do any editing. I have never encountered an xmp file this way either.

Yes, I've tried the alternate route as well, same results.
I cannot use the "photo downloader" suggestion as I have digitally created images that do not need a camera import.
I have been using the same template and my standard workflow for years now, I assume the problem is the "generative fill" feature in Photoshop, as the same workflow works with other images as usual, only the ones that have been touched in PS with "generative fill" create XMP files with changing metadata in Bridge (even just assigned a star rating).

Another comment: The problem started to ensure with the latest Photoshop version (Version 25.11).
In PS v24 I was also using the "generative fill" tool and the same workflow, without getting extra XMP files.

As an experiment, you could try copying one of your problem files (use Bridge so that it copies the xmp file too), open it in Photoshop and resave it as a new JPEG. See what effect that has.

I tried following your procedure by manipulating a JPEG image in Photoshop, used Generative Expand, used Bridge to overwrite the metadata with a new template and - no xmp file! Not much help I know, but I just never seem to encounter xmp files except when editing RAW images.

The problem come from Adobe Camera Raw.
I tested and those XMP files always come when I used AI with the brush in Camera Raw.

I just discovered that I'm having the same issue.... I was able to correct it by opening (directly from adobe bridge) the file in Light Room. Then exporting it as a new jpg. This worked for me. I als tried the same process with Photoshop, but did not have succes. Good luck!

Hi @Robert Kneschke , @john_4497
Thank you for reporting the issue. We apologize for the inconvenience caused.
The additional XMP file you observe is created when changing or applying metadata to any JPG/JPEG file containing Content Credentials. This behavior change was recently introduced due to Content Credentials support in Camera Raw release (version 16.3).
We're actively working to investigate this issue and will keep you posted on updates around this.
Please refer to helpx article: https://helpx.adobe.com/bridge/kb/xmp-file-jpeg.html for more details and a workaround.
Thanks,
Bridge team

Hi, I have followed the advice from @VarunVarshney which seems currently to work: Download and install Adobe Camera Raw 16.2 and the problems disappears (until Photoshop or Bridge get an update, then you have to do it again.

I'll be following this for the fix. I have the same issue. I can open the effected JPG files (with XMP Sidecar) in photoshop and resave then delete the XMP and it seems to work, but if I add any other metadata the same issue occurs.

The same problem has just started for me - so odd that xmp files are now created when metadata is added in Bridge. Frustrating as I am not going to give clients double files .....
