Bridge not saving changes to files in Camera Raw

New Here ,
Apr 20, 2023 Apr 20, 2023

Hi  - when I work on an image in Camera Raw- the changes are not being made when I close Camera Raw and go back to Essentials. In the past - the changes would be seen in the images in Essentials.

Let me guess: Are you working on JPGs?

Here's what's taking place: In ACR, you never change a single pixel; you are only changing how the image is "perceived." If you open that image in ACR, you can see the changes, but you must open an image in ACR to see those changes. If you want your computer and anyone else who does not have ACR to see those changes, you need to SAVE those changes into a new JPG, TIF, (whatever format you want). This "burns in" those changes so anyone can see the results.

This is different than a raw image, where most applications cannot even view a raw file directly, and it has to be opened in ACR first.

Think of ACR as providing filters that you look through to see the image after your adjustments. The catch is that you can only see the results when you're looking at the image IN ACR. (Within Bridge, you're always looking through those filters).

To have those changes as part of the image, you need to "burn" them into the image. This happens if you save the image into another JPG, TIF, PSD, etc. There are several ways to do this: you can open the image in PS and, from there, save the image. BTW, if you try to open a file that you've adjusted in ACR directly into PS, it will open up in ACR first so that the filters can be set before opening in PS.

From within ACR, you can click on this icon in the top right corner of the ACR window.

And from there, you'll get a window that gives you a number of save options.

One more thing: if you ever get started working with raw images, you'll find out that you cannot change a pixel in a raw image; it can only be adjusted with these. And again, you cannot change a pixel in a raw image, only how it looks after you've run your adjustment filters in ACR.

So, why is all this good? Let's say you took a great photo, used today's PS to make a bunch of adjustments, and then saved the document. Now, your original image is GONE. Now, let's say that next year's PS has some spectacular new features that, if you had it this year, could have done a much better job of fixing your image. But that image doesn't exist anymore. You saved it with last year's ability which isn't as good as next year's ability. This whole thing is what's behind "non-destructive editing." It's a good thing.

gary_sc, I have the feeling that you didn't understand the question. ACR not saving changes to files is also happening for me. When I make adjustments to images in ACR and close Bridge, the adjustments may not be saved. I have to redo them again. And this phenomena is random. Changes for some images won't be saved while for others they will. This was not happenning with Bridge 2022.

In case you ask, Bridge has complete access to disks.

All xmp files are generated by ACR. Bridge can only display what it has to work with. If ACR is not generating the XMP file than that is what the problem is. Pointing at Bridge at this point is pointing out Bridge as the issue is like faulting someone telling you bad news and you blame the middle man.

Let's try this. Go into the View menu in Bridge and select "Show Hidden Files." This will show you the xmp files (and all other hidden files) in any selected folder.

Now, as you work, if a files does not display the changes you made, look to see if the xmp file has been generated. If it has not been generated, that shows one possible problem. But if the xmp file HAS been generated, than either the xmp file is broke showing one kind of issue. Or, it's not being read, showing a different kind of issue.

Now, is this happening for all images or only a select few? What format are these images? (What kind of raw image?) Does this also happen with TIF or JPG images? (Their xmp data are contained in the file and cannot be seen.)

And to save me, or someone else asking in the future, what is your OS and what release. Which version and release of Bridge are you using?

Thank you.

Thanks Gary for the reply.

As your suggested, I checked for the hidden files and I see the ones only for NEF Raw files, none for .tif or .jpg files as you said. As I do a lot of focus stacking for macro photographie, most of my images are 16 bits .tif  files. I'm on Mac OS 13.3.1, Adobe Bridge 13.0.1.583. As I mentionned in my question, I didn't encounter this problem when using Bridge 12.

OK, next step: does this happen with every NEF you have or only a few?

AND for those where this happens, do you see the xmp file for the files that do not show the alterations?

Stephen is right.  ACR 'used' to save any changes made in ACR to a new JPG, without having to then press the 'save a new file'.   Bridge has not introduced the need to save any changes as a new file, which means a lot of EXTRA WORK.

In the old version of Bridge, you could always go back amke any changes to the old JPG too.
