Bridge version 13.0.2.636 crashing consistently

A few days ago, I updated my Bridge version to the new version 13.0.2.636.
After that I have constant crashes in bridge. It easy to reproduce:

 

  • Start Bridge
  • (Go to a folder with some images)
  • Select one image (for test purposes I select an JPEG image)
  • Hit SPACE to get full screen view
  • Hit SPACE again to get out of full screen view
  • Wait a couple of seconds: ---> CRASH
  • (Or click another image, see below)

 

This seems to be 100% repeatable and renders Bridge unusable.
This is somewhat of a crisis as I rely on Bridge for everyday work.

 

Several log files can be provided:

- CRASH-REPORT-after-full clean.txt (XML)
- Log Collector: AdobeLogs_20230116_015900_363-win-GS.zxp
- Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool.log

 

From CRASH-REPORT-after-full clean.txt:

Additional details:

When uninstalling version 13.0.2.636 and then installing version 12.0.3 everything seems to work OK!

I have submitted a few crash reports (using the dialog that pops up when Bridge crashes. I copy of the crash report can be supplied (an XML file generated by AdobeCrashReporter.

 

Further details:

When I experienced this the first time it was immediately after an update to version 13.0.2.636. I believe I was running version 13.0.1 before the update to 13.0.2.636. Everything seemed to work OK before the update to 13.0.2.636 (I got to test the new tabs etc.).

 

When I first noticed the crashes with 13.0.2.636, it behaved slightly differently. After hitting space the second time I had to initiate some kind of action (like using the right arrow key or clicking somewhere on the Bridge user interface) before I experienced a crash (or maybe I did not waited long enough).

 

I then uninstalled version for the first time and tried installing all versions (one at a time) from 12.0.3 (worked OK) and up (13.0, 13.0.1 and again 13.0.2, all now crashing).

 

I then uninstalled all Adobe Cloud apps using the "Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool" (which BTW seems to leave a lot of stuff left in "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe"?). I then reinstalled Photoshop and the latest version of Bridge (13.0.2.636). This did not solve the problem. Bridge still crashed as described above. I then again uninstalled version 13.0.2.636 and installed version 12.0.3 and Bridge again seems to work OK.

Exactly the same bug!!
Review mode (Ctrl-B) also crashes on ESC.


Enabling "Software rendering" solves it, but *ONLY* in version 13.0 (Which is unusable due to other bugs).
Both Version 13.01 & 13.02 crash, even if "Software Rendering" is enabled.

Version 12.0.4 works with "Software Rendering" ON or OFF.

Thanks for the feedback on "Software rendering" and Review mode!
I tried enabling "Software rendering" for version 13.0.2.636, but forgot to check the other two version "13" versions.
Fortunately, I can see that there are now a couple of other posts also with reports about this bug. Let’s hope Adobe will look at this problem soon since it makes Bridge unusable.

I just reinstalled the lastest Nvidia Drivers using the Perform Clean Install under the advanced options.
Then tested Bridge 13.2.

It worked as normal on the first attempt, but after quiting Bridge & testing again the second time it crashed again and bug persists.

We suspect that the recent NVIDIA driver update is causing crash in Adobe Bridge.

(Driver version : 31.0.15.2802 (528.02) , Release date : 5 Jan 2023)

 

We are further investigating the issue, please confirm if the issue is resolved by either of the below steps:

1. Downgrade the NVIDIA graphic card driver to the last stable version.

 

  1. Switch to “Software rendering” in Bridge preferences by following the below steps.
    • Navigate to Edit-> Preferences-> Advanced
    • Enable checkbox “Use Software Rendering”
    • Restart Bridge
    • Check if the crash is resolved while previewing files.

  • Uninstalled Bridge 12.0.3 (BTW: a new version 12.0.4 is available)
  • Installed Bridge version 13.0.2

 

  • Checked Bridge version 13.0.2 with NVIDIA 528.02 with GPU rendering:   CRASH

- I quit Bridge and did a full restart/reboot of Windows in between all steps descriped above

The problem is caused by the Nvidia driver 528.02. Nvidia have confirmed this.

On Jan 19 they released version 528.24 which cures the problem.

Visit their website to install.

Nvidia driver 528.24 release is only for RTX cards.
No new drivers for Geforce RTX cards as of yet.
Driver 527.56 is the latest working version for Gefore cards.

That seems to be true!

You will have to wait and see - surely a release must be imminent.

I can confirm that 528.24 cured this crashing problem experienced with my Quadro card when using 528.02.

Unfortunately the problems does not seem to have been completely fixed even when using the new NVIDIA driver.

**   See UPDATE below...


The repeatability is now somewhat lower than 100% and involves going to 100% view:

 

- Select an image
- SPACE to enter full screen view
- Click to enter 100% view--> CRASH
or
- Click again to go back to full screen view---> CRASH

Agree, the problem still exists even with the latest v528.24 drivers with Bridge 13.02, however the crash isn't instant, but occurs after going through a lot of fullscreen previews.

With v528.24:

Go to a folder -> select an image -> fullscreen -> hold right arrow and browser really fast, or just next image really fast manually, and/or open close fullscreen a lot and browser a folder of images.
Eventually it crashes. (Tested with many different image formats & RAWs).


**I do not have this crashe with NVIDIA driver v527.56**

NVIDIA v528.24

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X
RAM: 32 GB

I haven't got the time right now, but I'll reinstall v528.24 and grab an error message & another Log if it helps the Bridge team.

After a number of controlled installs and uninstalls (Bridge and NVIDIA driver), it now seems that the crashes on preview (both full screen and 100%) have gone for me.

 

As mentioned above I had crashes on 100% previews even with the new NVIDIA 528.24 driver and Bridge 13.0.2. Doing this:

 

- Select an image
- SPACE to enter full screen view
- Click to enter 100% view--> CRASH
or
- Click again to go back to full screen view---> CRASH

 

I have now done some additional tests/installs/uninstalls and this has resulted in that I now, so far, have had no more Bridge crashes on previews. The preview tests performed have however been somewhat limited (JPEG, different folders). Versions used:

 

Using NVIDIA:
   528.24 January 23, 2023     - new w/FIX (but still had crash for me with new Bridge)
   (528.02 January 5, 2023     - skipped this time)
   527.56 December 8, 2022   - has always been OK with both old and new Bridge versions

 

Using Bridge:
   13.0.2     - had for me crashes even with new NVIDIA driver
   12.0.3     - has always been OK with all three NVIDIA drivers

 

** Starting with Bridge 13.0.2 and NVIDIA 528.24 (CRASHING).

 

1) Install (clean) NVIDIA 527.56 December 8, 2022 (automatically removes/uninstalls 528.24)

 

2) Testing Bridge 13.0.2 + NVIDIA 527.56:

    - Use Software Rendering: ON -->> OK
    - Use Software Rendering: OFF -->> OK

 

3) Uninstalling Bridge 13.0.2

4) Installing Bridge 12.0.3

 

5) Testing Bridge 12.0.3 + NVIDIA 527.56:

    - Use Software Rendering: ON -->> OK
    - Use Software Rendering: OFF -->> OK

 

6) Install (clean) NVIDIA 528.24 January 23, 2023 (automatically removes/uninstalls 527.56)

 

7) Testing Bridge 12.0.3 + NVIDIA 528.24:

    - Use Software Rendering: ON -->> OK
    - Use Software Rendering: OFF -->> OK

 

8)Uninstalling Bridge 12.0.3
9) Installing Bridge 13.0.2

 

10) Testing Bridge 13.0.2 + NVIDIA 528.24:

      - Use Software Rendering: ON -->> now OK!
      - Use Software Rendering: OFF -->> now OK!

 

Summary:
The combination of Bridge 13.0.2 and NVIDIA 528.24 no longer crashes on full screen previews or 100% previews for me.
Not sure what did the trick, maybe the sequence of installs/uninstalls or maybe doing *clean* installs of the NVIDIA drivers (scottbu had positive results with clean installs here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/bridge-discussions/bridge-constant-crashes-after-driver-update/td-p/1...  ).

I'd say it's the Clean install of the Nvidia drivers.

I just reinstalled 528.24 (clean install) and can confirm Bridge 13.02 is now working correctly.
I'm pretty sure I neglected to do a clean install when I first tested 528.24.

The only other actions I did was to Purge the Bridge cache & reboot after the Nvidia driver install.

Unfortunately I am still having crashes using Bridge 13.0.2 and NVIDIA 528.24.

 

The crashes are on full screen previews as observed earlier:

 

- Select one image (for test purposes I select a JPEG image)
- Hit SPACE to get full screen view -->> CRASH

It looks like NVIDIA may not yet have released a fix for this problem.
I just found this in the 528.24 Feedback Thread (they have now added the Bridge preview crash under issues that are still open, this issue was not mentioned in the RN-08399-528.24_v01, January 24 release notes document):

 

Open Issues:

  • Toggling HDR on and off in-game causes game stability issues when non-native resolution is used. [3624030]
  • Monitor may briefly flicker on waking from display sleep if DSR/DLDSR is enabled. [3592260]
  • [Halo Wars 2] In-game foliage is larger than normal and displays constant flickering [3888343]
  • [Steam version] Forza Horizon 4 may freeze after 15-30 minutes of gameplay [3866530]
  • [GeForce RTX 4090] Watch Dogs 2 may display flickering when staring at the sky [3858016]

  • [Adobe Bridge] Application may crash when previewing images in full screen mode [3957846]

Also, when a crash has been detected, the Adobe crash reporter now pops up another dialog after the crash report has been sent. The dialog states (no mention of version 528.24 though):

 

"(Last updated on Jan 31, 2023)

Adobe has found a solution or workaround for the recent error in Bridge..."

So, this far it seems that only a workaround is available (no fix yet).

Installed 528.49 and tetsed 09 Feb on Windows 11 with Quadro GPU.

Seems to work fine (mind you, so did 528.24 for me!)
