Custom Info Panel as Bridge CC 2018 MetaData Panel

Hi,

in Bridge CC 2017 I had a custom file to add the metadata I want to view in the Metadata Panel.

This file was located at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Bridge CC 2017\Custom File Info Panels\4.0\custom\MyPanel.xml.

In the same location in Bridge CC 2018 it doesn't work.

In AppData\Roaming\Adobe\XMP\Custom File Info Panels\4.0\custom\panels\MyPanel.xml it doesn't work.

In AppData\Roaming\Adobe\XMP\Custom File Info Panels\4.0\custom\MyPanel.xml it doesn't work.

In AppData\Roaming\Adobe\XMP\Custom File Info Panels\4.0\MyPanel.xml it doesn't work.

In AppData\Roaming\Adobe\XMP\Custom File Info Panels\MyPanel.xml it doesn't work.

So, where should I install this file.

Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ruth

most of what you are looking for can be handled with standard fields and using keyword tagging. You can set your preferences in the metadata preferences which is is the pop up menu in the metadata panel.

I don't think that keywords are going to do what I want because

a) I need to record fixed dimensions for items in my catalogue and it seems to be keywords are not a good way to go about this and

b) I wanted to pull the data into InDesign with live captions.

Although I really wanted to store the information for each item in the metadata, I don't think it's going to be the way to go with the current capabilities of Bridge. So I think I'm going to have to change my workflow to use some kind of data merge model.

If you are going for something other then Bridge, I would suggest DBGallery which is a dedicated professional photo management data base.

Hi Ruth,

If your goal is to use the metadata for live captions in InDesign, I think you will need to stick with the fields available in the inDesign caption setup tool. I don't know inDesign that well, but it doesn't look like you can use custom metadata fields for live captions.

Can you use the IPTC Description field to hold your information? It seems like a good choice for a caption. Granted, you will have to put several discrete pieces of information in a single field which limits how you can use the metadata for other purposes.

Looks like now that Bridge is CEP compatible Adobe is suggesting that you need to create a custom panel to access/interact with this data versus how it had been done in Bridge 2017. This is a bit of a pain as I, too, have an xml file that we've been using for the last few versions of Bridge and it is nice being able to access custom metadata fields in the same place as standard metadata fields without having to go into File Info.

As stated in my last post, I am trying to create a CEP extension.
If I succeed it will be a feast, I may not have results before the XML problem is fixed.

Presently I use Bridge 2017 which works fine.

I have many custom panels I would like to convert to CEP. Creating the UI in CEP seems straightforward (nice to be able to use html and css for styling), but so far I have not been able to read or write XMP. If I make any progress, I'll let you know.

Hello pdophoto,

I was able to port my custom XMP panel using XML from Adobe CC 2017 to 2018 for Photoshop but the custom XMP panel doesn't work for Bridge CC 2018. Have you found another solution other than using javascript?

I posted the question but no one has responded.

Hi everyone,

I finaly made a working metadata panel for bridge. It works in bridge 2017 and 2018.

It is not as practical as the old type in bridge 2017, it does not support multi thumbnail selection but I hope it will help someone.

There were some warning agains doing metadata modifications, they still stand, so use the panel at YOUR OWN RISKS.

The panel is located at file://DESKTOP-IKKPIRR/Users/Utilisateur/Dropbox/Bridge%20Panel

So sorry, the dropbox on my computer wasn't synched.

to use all tags you will need exiftool and notepad++ or modify th panel for your editor

So, what exactly do with this jsx file? Are you putting it into a CEP panel or running directly?

You should put it in Bridge startup folder

Open Bridge, go to edit menu, preference, in the preference panel choose: startup scripts

At the bottom left click the "Reveal My Startup Scripts" and copy the jsx file there.

Restart Bridge, you should have a new menu "Metadata".

Choose a thumbnail, go to the new menu to activate the panel.

This version installed and worked for me. Pretty cool! Is this just to consolidate the fields you want to edit into a single panel?

I did run into a couple of issues with it though.

When I run it for a file and the metadata panel opens if I click OK button nothing happens. And if I click the Reset button it opens a new Meta window. I've had to Force Quit Bridge in order to close out the window.
It also opens ExtendScript Toolkit automatically when run. Not sure that is intended.

seanmurp thank you so much for testing and posting your results.

Issue 1: Did you copy the file in the Startup Scripts folder, if so it doesn't start the ExtendScript Toolkit.

I will cancel the reset button as it's not required. I needed it while programming the panel to see if the corrections were done,

it reread the metadatas and revise the display.

The OK button is the exit button.

Issue 2: If the file is in the Startup Scripts folder, if so it doesn't start the ExtendScript Toolkit.
