Unable to use Edit Original in After Effects

I'm using an Apple Mac Studio with M1 Max and 64gb of memory. Also using After Effects 25.2.2.

I have a reset my preferences and made sure project link was checked in my quicktime prores 422hq output.

Despite this, I cannot "edit original".  The video defaults to quicktime player instead of After Effects. As you already know, this is something we use all the time.  Any ideas of what to do next?

thanks in advance,

tom

Hi everyone,

At our company, we produce a lot of renders, and often need to quickly locate and open the corresponding After Effects project file to make edits. Previously, using Command+E would open the AE file linked to a render, but recently this shortcut hasn’t been working; especially in After Effects 2025.

I’ve tried resetting the AE preferences, but that didn’t resolve the issue. Has anyone else encountered this problem or found a workaround?

Any insights or solutions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks 🙂

Hi all,

The most recent builds of AE Beta (version 25.6) include a fix for Edit Original with files rendered from After Effects on macOS. Please install the latest Beta build and let us know you continue to experience this issue.

Thanks again for reporting this,

- John, After Effects Engineering Team

I'm able to confirm that Edit Original in After Effects 25.x is not opening the embedded After Effects project file as expected.

If 24.x is also installed, it will launch instead of 25.x and present an error message that the project was created in a newer version.

If only 25.x is installed, the following error message will appear:

This issue does not appear to affect the Windows version of 25.x.

If the source footage is a PSD, AI, or PNG, then Edit Original works as expected.

The only work around that I have found is to use File > Save As to roll 25.x projects back to 24.x and continue to work in 24.x.  Also, for the time being, start new projects in 24.x as well.

Steps to reproduce:
I'm unable to use the Edit > Edit Original command in After Effects to locate movie file origin projects via embedded meta data since AE2025.

Have tried reinstall, clearing preferences and starting in safe mode but the same result. It does however work in 2024 but the project it locates is 2025 so is unable to open and it doesn't state a filepath to locate manually.

Result:

Instead I've given two error dialogues "After Effects warning: std::exception" & "

After Effects warning: Movie original creator could not be invoked."

Expected:

As has been the case for years the program should locate and open the original file and locate the comp.

System info
    Application: After Effects v25.2.2.2
OS: macOS v15.3.1, RAM: 64.00 GB GB, CPUs (logical): 16

Have dragged the movie into a text edit and have been able to locate the filepath but it'd be great to resolve.

Also forgot to mention that AE has full disk privledges which I know is sometime the problem with the After Effects warning: std::exception

Is this happening with a specific format? Do you mind sharing the steps so that we can reproduce the issue on our end? Feel free to share a screen recording.

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,
Nishu

Hi @efficient_member1549,

I read your post. I'm Kevin from Adobe Support, a moderator here. Thanks for the info you already provided. The team will have to assist you with this bug. Please allow them a little time to reach out. In the meantime, try other dynamic link workflows and see if they are working as expected. Another test you can try is to uninstall and reinstall the applications. I hope the team will arrive soon to help you troubleshoot. Sorry for the hassle.

Thanks,
Kevin

Thanks Kevin. I appreciate your help in solving this. I have already done
a reinstall of AE without success. I will try the other apps to see if they
work per normal.
