P: Lens Profile requests and information

Lens Profiles apply to Camera Raw, Lightroom Classic, and the Lightroom Ecosystem products (Desktop, Mobile, and Web).

Lens Profiles are available for a wide array of lenses. Not every lens is currently profiled, and of those profiled, not all are profiled for all camera and file types. For example, there may be a profile for a particular lens and camera mount for the raw file but not for the JPEG. Normally, profiles for JPEG are not supplied unless the camera does not apply a correction (e.g. iPhone, GoPro).

A complete list of profiled lenses can be found here: https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/supported-lenses.html
other helpful info: https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/lens-profile-support.html#Supported_lenses

Lens correction for all Micro 4/3 (MFT) lenses and many newer cameras, including Panasonic and Olympus cameras, and other cameras (including Fuji X,  Leica Q, and Nikon Z series)plus many point-and-shoot models from Canon) happens automatically without any interaction by the customer. A notation will appear in the Lens Correction Panel designating this.

Note: You should not expect to find any profiles listed in the pop-up notes, because the corrections are always applied.

If you are unsure whether your lens is supported automatically refer to the "info" button/icon on the Lens Corrections tab.

If your lens is not on the supported lens list and is not one of those whose correction happens automatically, you can create your own profiles using the Adobe Lens Profile Creator. Download the Adobe Lens Profile Creator: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/digital-negative.html#resources

If you desire an Adobe-created Lens Profile, please make your request in the comments of this thread. Be sure to include the full lens model/description and the camera mount you desire. ETAs for new lens profiles are not available.

Keep in mind that lens profiles cannot be made for tilt/shift lenses, and the tilt or shift settings cannot be recorded in the Exif data. A feature request exists here for Tilt-Shift Lens Profiles: https://community.adobe.com/t5/camera-raw-ideas/p-lens-profiles-for-tilt-shift-lens/idi-p/12221166

Note: The Lens Profile Creator is currently supported for Windows and 32-bit Versions of the Mac OS.

ETAs are not available for any lens request.

We’re six years past the date on this article (https://lightroomkillertips.com/what-to-do-when-lightroom-cant-find-your-lens-profile/) and Lightroom Classic still has this same issue. I’m using a Nikon Z-6 with modern Nikkor lenses, so why is it so useless at detecting the lens? And why are common lenses still missing such as my 24-70mm kit lens that came with my Z-6?

Hallo Rikk!

Request Adobe add a profile for the micro-NIKKOR 55mm f/2.8 AI-s manual lens.  This lens has been in continuous production from 1979 to the present.

Using Adobe camera RAW I notice that there are no profiles for older Olympus vintage lenses, not one it seems. Olympus was a prolific film camera and lens manufacturer, with hundreds of different lens designs produced over many decades and subsequently became a digital camera manufacturer. So why is it that that there is a plethora of lens profiles for just about every other lens manufacturer from that same period, ( some of which I have never heard of ), and no profiles for Olympus lenses???

What exact camera model do you have? Depending on the model, Nikon may not allow their built-in profile to be disabled.

Hi!

I just bought the new Sony FE 20-70 mm F4 G Lense and while trying to edit the photos, I released that there is currently no lense profile in the lens corrections menu for the Sony FE20-70 mm F4 G.

Considering that this lens is quit new, I would assume that the lens is still missing because it is a very new lens and Adobe has not yet had time to create a profile for this specific lens?

"there is currently no lense profile in the lens corrections menu for the Sony FE20-70 mm F4 G."

That lens is designed for full-frame Sony mirrorless cameras, and it appears that at least some of the cameras embed a built-in Sony lens profile in the raw files, with instructions to LR not to allow the lens profile to be disabled. For such lenses, Adobe generally doesn't provide its own lens profiles, since the manufacturer is supplying them.

If you see "Built-in Lens Profile applied", that indicates the raw file contains an embedded lens profile and LR is automatically applying it (as instructed by Sony).  Here's an example photo from a Sony a7R V taken with that lens:

johnrellis_0-1676166438152.png

You can apply your own lens corrections on top of the built-in lens profile (and try to undo the built-in corrections), but you can't disable the built-in profile.

If you don't see "Built-in Lens Profile applied" in your Lens Corrections panel, please post a screenshot of what you do see, along with the precise camera model.

The built in profile only corrects for CA, not for distortion. The distortion is pretty bad....

Sony .ARW raw file has optics correction for ALL parameters - but Adobe is not letting users to apply them ... Ask Adobe why 🙂

Hi John,

thank you very much for your response. Sadly this built-in Lense Profile does not correct for distortion or vignetting.

As can be seen, by your screenshot and in my comparison shots below, the build-in profile only compensates for chromatic aberration!

It does not mention distortion or vignetting, which are a big problem for this lens if not corrected for!

Below I've added two pictures. The picture is shot using a 20-70 F4 G set to 20mm on an Alpha 7 AIV with all lens compensation options turned ON in the body.

Both images are from the same shot since I have set to the camera to the raw + jpg per shot setting!

This image is the jpg image directly from the camera body.

JPG_From_Camera_Body.jpg

This is the corresponding RAW file exported in lightroom classic (with today's 12.2 update installed) using the built-in lens profile.

RAW File with build in lense correction profile.jpg

As you can see the exported raw file image is immensely distorted and has a lot of vignetting at the corners! In comparison, the jpg directly from the camera body has straight lines and also does not have any vignetting!

I wrote, "it appears that at least some of the cameras embed a built-in Sony lens profile in the raw files, with instructions to LR not to allow the lens profile to be disabled. For such lenses, Adobe generally doesn't provide its own lens profiles, since the manufacturer is supplying them."

With respect to Sony lenses, this is incorrect: Adobe sometimes does provide lens profiles for lens that have built-in (embedded) lens profiles correcting just chromatic aberration.  I found these examples in my test catalog:

A7 IV, Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di III VXD G2 A063

A7 III, Tamron 70-180mm F/2.8 Di II VXD A056g

A1, Sony FE 50mm F1.2 GM

A7R V, Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II

So perhaps Adobe will provide a profile for the Sony FE 20-70 mm F4 G in the next release or two.

Worse yet is that you cannot use the manual slider to get rid of the distortion!

Hope we don't have to wait for 2 months for the next update, and they do a 12.2.1 release...

just make sure to read the manual ! keep in mind - you can either let S-Transformer apply corrections  itself OR make those corrections available to ACR/LR as DNG tags so that Adobe software can finally apply them now ...
