Advocate ,

My local CC Sync Folder is on my system hard drive, and is fairly large-ish (25gb)... can I simply move it to a different drive?

thanks!

use your cc app > files > preferences to change your sync folder. then you can delete the old one.

no.

you can uninstall your cc apps from your os drive and install them to another hard drive.

Sorry, should have been more clear- I'm referring only to my Sync Folder (working files), not my Apps (Mac) folder, which is where the apps live. (Original post edited)

thanks

Didn't work, unfortunately. After a while, I just got an error message saying the directory couldn't be created. I don't know if there's anything that's supposed to show progress.

Any suggestions?

Can I do this manually?

you can't use the root of a drive and you may have have trouble using an external drive.

if that's not helpful, explain what drive/folder you're trying to use.

Thanks - where can I find these "guidelines" ?

It's currently on my system hard drive, I just want to move it to an external SSD. Per your note, I tried moving it into the root. I'll create a folder (even though it's technically a folder itself) and try again...

Just got off the phone with Adobe support (which was excellent, btw) & I had to enable permissions. This apparently isn't something recognized by CC when it's asked to start this procedure, unlike other apps that alert the user to the need to enable permissions to access locations, camera, etc.

So, fortunately, it appears to be working, although it also seems like it's excruciatingly slow.

you had to enable read/write permissions on your ssd?

and once things sync the first time, your sync speed will (hopefully) increase.

Yes, I had to enable permissions on a system level in Settings...

Unfortunately, the process made a mess.

I now have:

  1. (5) "Creative Cloud Files" folders on the destination drive, four of which are followed by a number 1 through 5 in parentheses. They are all different and contain different sets of folders, which may be named the same but with different contents
  2. (1) Creative Cloud Files folder remaining on my internal hard drive - in its original location - with yet another set of folders that are incomplete. It appears some files transferred to the new location and some did not.
  3. Creative Cloud Files folders on my other computers, which now match the top-level (correct?) Creative Cloud Files folder on the destination file.

Well... It looks like I'm going to have to manually sort through each and move to the new destination folder. I can't imagine why this is such a convoluted and time-consuming process. We literally should only need to move the folder itself, manually, and point to it through preferences.

i think the correct procedure is to change the sync folder in the cc app preferences to an empty folder and let it sync but that might confuse the app.

you could also try copying your previous local sync folder to a new location and then assign that new folder in the cc app preferences.

Hi KGlad et al,

I read the original question (which is like mine) but then I became worried after reading all the "what actually happens when you change.....".

I know painfully well what happens when you don't follow LR's rules particularly with file management/backup...

So here's my question/concern....

My work flow is using BOTH LR CC and Classic (for the full functionality and my experience w/ Classic; synched cloud backup from Adobe; and local storage of both CC and Classic),  and the series of backups that I have created over the past decade....from the camera card (copy 1-which will be reformatted from time to time) to the laptop's 1T SS HD for editing (copy 2-fast access for editing, though not as fast as I thought even w/ an Nvidia video card); then backed up to an external HD (Copy 3-in case the NAS fails-see next step) then backed up to the 24T Synology NAS (Copy 4 and the "permanent final resting place of all my pics") with the NAS auto backed up q week to Amazon S3 Glacier DEEP Storage via a Synology app (copy 5- in case of house/computers/HD burning, water damage, tornado, etc)....

My Goals are:
1) to move files from Copy 2 (laptop local storage from CC cloud) to Copy 3 (external HD) to keep my HD free and fast (currently 35G of CC originals)..

So since I already have the folder structure on my SS HD (....Adobe\lightroom CC\Data...and then there are another 8 subfolders), will be changing the location from Copy 2 to Copy 3 in EDIT/PREFERENCES....move only new pictures added after this date to the new location, or will it move all existing older pics as well as new pics to the new location...

Ideally, I would like NEW PICS to stay on my SS HD and only older pics move for storage purposes. So how best should I do an incremental backup to COPY 3, while leaving new pics to flow as is to the SS HD?

While I'm asking, I have had another LR Classic Backup Problem...When I used to import pictures to LR Classic (and onto my laptop) I setup the "Make a second copy" to external HD (Copy 3)....unfortunately, this is the raw pics before editing and deleting so that HD is not helpful as a trueback up... I'm having to make a manual move from LR file management from the SSHD to the NAS.

Any automated way of accomplishing this?

it no longer matters what you do with your local cc sync folder.  adobe's stopped supporting local syncing, so you can do what you want with it.
