The same thing is happening to me. I was trying to redeem an ebook from Google Play Books and went through all of their basic troubleshooting steps (uninstalling and reinstalling the program, restarting computer, redownloading file, making sure computer time is correct, makign sure ADE is authorized) and nothing helped. I also am downloading a .tmp file whenever I try and download the .ascm file, not sure if that's related

Looking around on status.adobe.com I found that the adobe experience platform Core Services is having issues. ADEPT stands for Adobe Digital Experience Protection Technology so maybe if they fix that our problem will be fixed too

I am having this exact same problem too! Google Play tells me to contact Adobe. I thought that they were passing the buck, but apparently it is a problem with Adobe. I tried to talk to someone at Adobe but have been totally unsuccessful. I received one message saying that Adobe does noot provide support ffor Digital Editions (presumably because it's a free app). You know, Digital Editions really sucks and customer support is non-existent!

Only on Google Play Books?
This just happened to me buying an ebook on Google Books (Sep 18) and I found this page with the identical error message so I tried borrowing a library ebook as an epub and it downloaded without any problems. In the past when there were problems getting epubs in Adobe Digital Editions it affected both bought and borrowed/library ebooks. I used to have to unlicense my device and relicense it to fix the problem. I'm thinking of contacting Google Play about this but if others bought their ebooks from a different ebook seller than Google that wouldn't make sense.
PS, just found out what the acronym ADEPT stands for "Adobe Digital Experience Protection Technology (ADEPT) is a digital rights management (DRM) technology that was developed by Adobe Systems"

I just tested this by buying an ebook from Kobo and it downloaded to Adobe Digital Editions without any problems. As my library epub downloaded without problems and Kobo did, too, I think this is a Google Play book problem & I'm going to contact them.

Yeah - that seems correct. I bought the same book from the Kobo store and it just worked.

Further to my earlier question about whether this could be a Google Play Books problem, I just tested this by buying an ebook from Kobo and it downloaded to Adobe Digital Editions without any problems. As my library epub downloaded without problems and Kobo did, too, I think this is a Google Play book problem & I'm going to contact them.
I've now contacted Google Play books with the error & all my book purchase details & if I get an answer from them I'll report it here.

I have the same issue, but it only occurs with books I purchased recently. When I export books bought in December 2023 on Google Play Books, they can be successfully imported into ADE.

Same here. Only recently bought Google Play Books are having this issue. My previously purchased books are all fine. While others reported that books from other sources (e.g. kobo) have no problem, it would seem to be a Google Play Book issue.

Same problem. no way to solve it. I've tried to apply several suggestions but all was not worked for me.
1> timesync check and set NTP server
2> re-register
3> change file path under simple path like c:\temp
4> Opened ticket to Google and if there is any issue from google playbook. > no issue.

Same issue. Noticed yesterday, September 18 around 4pm-ish. I had been able to process .acsm files with no issue just 4 days prior.
Only had issues with .acsm files downloaded via Google Play (AFTER 9/14, but noticed 9/18)
Files from as recent as 9/14 work, and can be removed and readded with no issues, also .acsm, also from Google Play.
Hoping this saves someone attempts. Hopefully it is fixed soon.

I have the same issue. Thought it was because i added it to a different ADE gmail account but i re-authorized with the correct account and it persists.

I am also experiencing this issue. I have contacted Google, but they were unable to resolve it. They advised me to reach out to Adobe, stating that messages starting with "e_adept" are from Adobe, while errors from Google start with "Google." When I contacted Adobe, they simply brushed me off, saying that they would only provide further support for paid items, and for general enquiries, I should ask in this group.

I have exact same problem today (20th Sep, 2024), fail to download (both on core_key_scramble error) on both ADE android app & PC version ADE.
After contacting with Google online support, I follow their troubleshooting instructions patiently (for the love of god, I have brought more than 500 books from Google Play Books over the last couple years and export most of them already, but anyway...); while I don't believe their troubleshooting works for this particular issue (otherwise we won't have such thread here), I still do every steps as the support staff asked.
Re-download books and re import for multiple times, then deauthorization and uninstall ADE, download latest (supposed but I don't think my previous install is any older than current one) and reinstall, reboot PC then try redownload books, eventually ... I got my error message CHANGED from "E_ADEPT_CORE_KEY_SCRAMBLE" to "E_GOOGLE_DEVICE_LIMIT_REACHED". **yawn**
(note that I also have 560+ books from different Kobo stores, 100+ books from another local ebook stores, and my latest attempt to import my latest Kobo purchase went through without a single problem.)
I also try opening a website to "test if I can connect to Adobe activate site" (which I got a 404 error - I went on to test from various country via VPN also got 404... go figured), then try contact with Adobe support as Google support adviced. Eventually Adobe support say ADE is free product so no support provided, and point me here ( Thank you to point me to where I started! )
Anyway, Google support then promised they will reset the "device limit reached" books and maybe escalating the original issue (E_ADEPT_CORE_KEY_SCRAMBLE) to different people and hopefully I'll got answer in 24-48 hours time. I don't have much hope, through.

I also have the same problem (18th Sept 2024). I received an answer from Google support that the problem is from Adobe, but I explained to them that only the latest .epub files from Google Play Books have this problem. I tried .epub files from another site and from last year's Google Play and I had no problems, but they insisted that the problem is not theirs (they are experts in Google Play...)
