eReader not authorized to open this book

When I download a book from my public library I can open it in digital editions 4.5 but when I transfer it to my device (kobo) and try to open it on the kobo it says "This book is protected by DRM. Because you previously deauthorized your eReader, you need to re-import the book using Adobe Digital Editions." I tried erasing authorization and setting git up again but it still won't work. Erased and downloaded a new edition of ADE, that didn't work either. Tried different books and libraries but still have problem. Called kobo and after troubleshooting with them they say it as ADE problem. Please please please help! Thank you!

This thread is old but incase anyone is suffering from the same problem here in January 2023. I have finally figured out a hack to get my Kobo to work.

For the record, I have tried everything: De/Re Authorizing, deleting books, overdrive account vs adobe account, etc. I couldn't use ADE V3 as my Mac is running 64 bit and it's not supported. I thought I was hooped until I came across this in my hours of searching:

    1. Download another random book. One you HAVE NOT had on hold (this is important because this seems to effect books on hold more than anything). Just choose something random.
    2. Load the random book + the book you want into ADE at the same time.
    3.  Profit!

I don't know if it's a bug with holds or what, but so far this has worked for me for my last 3 books!

    Hopefully this helps someone.

I had this problem too and downloaded Calibre and a plugin to solve it (with the help of this internet page, which I give the credits) .

    In short:

    1) Download the ebooks and open them in ADE.

    2) Download Calibre.

    3) Download this plugin: DeDRM_plugin_654.

    4) Open Calibre. Go to Preferences --> Advanced --> Plugins. Choose 'Load plugin from file' en select the plugin (step 3). Install it.

    5) Restart Calibre.

    6) Click on 'Add books' (green button). Go to C:\Users\<your username>\Documents\My Digital Editions (if you can't find it, just search for 'My Digital Editions'. Select the books you want to read on your ereader (only epub format) and press Enter. If you are doing alright you will see the books in Calibre.

    7) Connect your ereader to your computer (if you haven't already done this before). A button that allows you to download the books to your ereader should appear. I don't know what it should be saying, since I am using the Dutch version and not the English one.

😎 Disconnect your ereader and try if you can read the book. The cover may still be black, but you should be able to read the book. If not (this happened to me a few times), try again. One time I had to download the ebook to ADE again to make it work.

    9) Enjoy! I hope this will help you all.

The only solution I know is to use ADE 3.0

I tried everything with ADE 4.5 but it was just broken.

So I erased authorization for my computer and Kobo and then uninstalled ADE and installed ADE 3.0 instead.  Reauthorized and now all good again.  Have backed up the 6 year old ADE 3.0 installer in case adobe decides to remove it since I guess I'm never upgrading!

Unfortunately, ADE 3.0 doesn't work with Mac OS Catalina.

I have the same issue. I've tried everything in this thread, and anything else I could find. I contacted adobe, and they told me to go through the forum. When I told them the forum solutions aren't working for me, they just said I need to post my own question in order to get "dedicated support". So here I am, hoping someone will be able to help. I've tried de-authorizing and re-authorizing, deleting and downloading new books, factory resets, and doing all of the above in various orders. Adobe 3.0 doesn't work on my new computer, so that's not working either. Does anyone have any other ideas??

I have the same problem. I can't believe that Adobe can't offer a solution. It's their software.

I had the same problem and tried many times to fix it without any luck. I tried to authorize my ereader (I have a Kobo) and my computer in a different order today and its worked! I followed the instructions in this exact order and it has worked on mine. In short, the difference for me seemd to be that you need to authorize your ereader first, and then the computer authorization is automatic. My previous attemps I authorized my computer first, then my Kobo second. I hope this will help you as well!

Solved the problem by using ADE 3.0 but a few days later it happened again. Somehow version 3.0 was replace by 4.1 automatically. So re-installed 3.0 again and all is good. Until the next time!

I can't even open 3.0 when I install? Tried 2. It opens but doesn't authorize.

I have been facing the same issue. The only procedure that worked for me was:

    1. Deauthorize my computer and my kobo.

    2. Uninstall Adobe Digitial Editions 4.5

    3. Install Adobe Digital Editions 3.0

    4. Open ADE and authorize my computer.

    5. Close ADE and plug in kobo.

    6. Open ADE as an admin (!!!) - this was the most important step which made it working out for me!

    7. Now I was able to authorize my kobo.

    8. Download the .ascm-file. Like others already stated, you must save it in your Downloads first. It didn't work for me when I opened it in ADE directly.

    9. Open the .ascm-file in ADE and copy it on your kobo by drag & drop.

    Hope this helps someone.

Hi Mondmaedchen - I have been pulling my hair out.. First looking for ADE 3.0 so thank you David - but now I cant seem to import my downloaded ebooks from the library... Keep getting the "Error Getting license... E_ACT_NOT_READY" message.  I don't know how to open ADE as an Admin... Can you provide more detail re: how to do this?  Importing the same books to ADE 4.5 was not an issue (only getting them to open on my Kobo ereader was).  Thanks in advance...

    Hi Karen67,

first of all: I'm sorry for the late answer!

You can open ADE as an admin by right clicking the icon before opening the program. My native language is German, so I don't know how it looks like in English for sure. But for me, literally translated, it says something like "Run as admin" in the dialogue. Choose this option and ADE should open up. You may be asked for permission before executing ADE, just say yes - sometimes it is necessary to enter a password. You can then try to import your books.

You won't actually see the change, the important changes rather happen in the background, giving you certain rights which may have been missing for successfuly importing your books.

    Hope that helps 🙂
