When I download a book from my public library I can open it in digital editions 4.5 but when I transfer it to my device (kobo) and try to open it on the kobo it says "This book is protected by DRM. Because you previously deauthorized your eReader, you need to re-import the book using Adobe Digital Editions." I tried erasing authorization and setting git up again but it still won't work. Erased and downloaded a new edition of ADE, that didn't work either. Tried different books and libraries but still have problem. Called kobo and after troubleshooting with them they say it as ADE problem. Please please please help! Thank you!
This thread is old but incase anyone is suffering from the same problem here in January 2023. I have finally figured out a hack to get my Kobo to work.
For the record, I have tried everything: De/Re Authorizing, deleting books, overdrive account vs adobe account, etc. I couldn't use ADE V3 as my Mac is running 64 bit and it's not supported. I thought I was hooped until I came across this in my hours of searching:

My new Kobo Libra H20 as of this year was working fine with Adobe 4.5. I've updated everything, synched, tried both 3.0 and 4.5, unauthorized and reauthorized and it still won't work.

See my last comment on the main thread. There is a way by importing a totally new book first after deathourizing on both devices.

Oh my! Thank you so much! 3.0 didn't work for me but the 2.0 does! After hours of frustration, I can finally read my borrowed library books.
Thank you!

Over 4 years after previous post the problem persists.
I've erased authorisation; deleted downloads; reauthorised; changed Overdrive authorisation to match ADE...
Still cannot read library books downloaded to ADE and copied to my Kobo (Libra H2O).
If a book won't sync via WiFi it cannot be read, because Adobe says that I'm not Authorized. What else can one do to authorise an ereader?

Hi Steve. I remember how upset and frustrated I was before finding a way to read library books on my new Kobo Clara. Gratitude to MargrietD. This is a repost of a reply I wrote to someone earlier this year:
If you haven't tried it already, Margriet's method (posted above) works for me: uploading the ePub to my Kobo Clara via Adobe, then uploading the PDF to my Kobo Clara, opening the PDF first, then opening the EPub I want to read. Here's a copy of Margriet's post -- I hope this works for you.
After this, the first epub still won't open (cover is black) but the second epub and te PDF will open without a problem. This trick is less invasive then installing a new version so I would suggest people try this first. Not sure if this will work always but it has worked for me several times now.

After the other suggestions failed to fix the the problem for me, this finally worked. I downloaded ADE 3.0 and authorized using my Adobe credentials (not Overdrive), and after authorizing the Kobo and copying the eBook, everything works fine. Thanks to lizm39316639 for the info, but no thanks to Adobe for whatever was changed in 4.5 that makes this authorization procedure not work!

I have the same issue, too... I am beside myself that I can't get this issue resolved. Hours and hours of troubleshooting and waiting to speak to Adobe customer support... and they told me to come check out the forums. Thanks for the suggested fixes frmo people in this thread. None worked for me though

Same problem, but a brand new eReader. I can't authorise the device in ADE, same as lizm. I had ADE 4.5 and tried to download 3.0 but my Mac won't downgrade. Contacted kobo who told me that it was an Adobe problem, and found myself here. While you're all lovely people and I hope that you've resolved your issues, I think that Adobe's lack of support is deplorable.
My only idea now is to use OverDrive on my iPad to download library books and sync onto the kobo reader. Haven't tried it yet, and why would I use the Kobo if the book's on my iPad anyway?
Good luck everyone!

I am trying to solve the exact same problem for my 84 year old mother. I was the one to encourage her to stop buying books and try our library. She can't hold onto a regular book because of arthritis, and she uses a peeramid to prop up the ebook.
They have absolutely NO phone number for the ADE, and the help and forum are the only options. I can't contact my library today as it is a holiday here in Ontario. I can't believe they don't have a customer service. Clearly everyone is trying to help each other, but there is no help from the makers of this idiotic program.

Why does downloading a an ebook have to be so impossible?

A potential solution do those who have tried everything else... google “Calibre for Kobo”. It isn’t legal but frankly what are you supposed to do if you’ve purchased a device and have tried everything to make it work?

From what I read you have to also install the DeDRM Plugin after installing Calibre. Google "Apprentice Alf's Blog".
What gets me is that on occasion a Library borrowed ebook will download and install on my Kobo and open as it should. This is so with maybe one of every four or five downloads and following the correct procedures each time. Very frustrating especially so as Adobe doesn't seem to care or try to fix the problem which seems to be widespread.

Will this work with a library ebook downloaded to ADE and then transferred to Calibre to Kobo?

Yes. You are likely to spend a ton of time getting it set up following online instructiins, but yes, ultimately I know success is possible.

I've pretty much given up on trying to download library borrowed e-books to my kobo. Instead I recently began reading them in a browser on my I-Pad.

That's what I'm doing now, too! I also have a Sony eReader that no longer supports DRM material. It would appear that there's a move to allow only purchased materials to be read on these devices. We may have to return to hard copy books in future!
