Adobe DRM 9.1, ePub, Mobi, PRC, RTF, TXT, PDF, FB2, djvu, JPG, Gif, PNG, BMP

I am looking to buy books, but they are a minefield of DRM and non returnable/refundable.

Do I really need a specail software install for PDF even with the DRM 9.1 supported format?  Jetbooks much like all e readers do not let you install much.

Is adobe drm 9.1 support the same as having ADE software or not?

Downloading your eBook is simple; click on the "download this eBook" link from your Smart Receipt or email confirmation and then follow the step-by-step directions that are presented on screen.
If you would like to download your eBook at a later time (not during this session), please click on "Register" at the top of the web page to create a profile with Penguin. You will then be able to download from your order history page.

If I choose epub instead of pdf from Penguin publishing this is the message and it seems to say it is not an industry standard epub but specailly DRM managed and again needing special software. 

So again the question is Is adobe drm 9.1 support the same as having ADE software or not?

    The name 'Adobe' is bandied about often out of context, and your question

    helps to get the details straight.

    Let's start with DRM. That means Digital Rights Management, and it's a set

    of parameters that have been implemented in epublication software. Adobe

    developed a set of programs that implement DRM called 'Content Manager',

    and it became one of the industry's standard approaches. Other

    epublication companies like Apple and Amazon chose to do it differently,

    and developed their own approaches.

    Adobe incorporated their DRM approach in their epublication software -

    Digital Editions and Reader. I think Overdrive, Calibre, Bluefire Reader

    and others also use the Adobe DRM approach.

    So, Adobe DRM 9.1 is NOT Digital Editions. It's the level of Adobe

    'Content Manager' which is embedded in Digital Editions and other

    companies' epublication software. And the message is correct: Apple does

    digital rights their own way, so if you're using an iPad, iPhone or other

    Apple device (which use ADRM), the encoding that Penguin is using won't run

    on those machines. Ditto for some of the ereaders.

    The bottom line is that Penguin is covering their a.. with the disclaimer,

    and it can be confusing. They will download epublication files to Adobe

    Digital Editions just fine, and you should have no problems. Your JetBook

    is supported by Digital Editions, so if you transfer an ebook to your

    computer, you should be able to transfer it to your JetBook.

    This post is getting a bit long, but before I end, let's cover the Digital

    Editions part. You need to log into the Adobe website and obtain an Adobe

    ID BEFORE you download Digital Editions, so that your copy will be

    registered with Adobe. Once you do, then download and install Digital

    Editions. THEN, you can log onto the Penguin site and download the ebook

    in .epub format. Don't be confused by the references to '.ascm format' -

    that's just a tag file that's passed to Digital Editions so that Digital

    Editions knows where the ebook is and can then download it. Take the time

    to browse through the HELP files in Digital Editions so you have some idea

    of how the program works. It's available through the F1 key in Library or

    Reading view.

    Once the ebook's been downloaded, it looks like Penguin's implementation of

    DRM will let you transfer a copy of it to your ereader. With Digital

    Editions closed, you plug in your JetBook to your computer, and make sure

    that your computer recognizes it (usually as an external hard drive). With

    that done, you can open Digital Editions, and the ereader should show up on

    the bookshelf (the left hand panel in Library view). You can drag and drop

    ebooks from your library onto the JetBook. Watch the JetBook's screen to

    see when the download is complete. When you've finished transferring

    ebooks, close Digital Editions. Watch the JetBook's screen to see when

    it's finished wrapping up the details. When it is, use the computer's

    facilities to disconnect it logically before you unplug it. For a Windows

    user, that is done either through Windows Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer)

    by ejecting it, or through the icon on the right hand side of the START bar

    that will 'Safely Remove Device'.

    I thank you for the well worded explanation.

    So it looks like I could choose either pdf or epub format from this publisher (penguin) as long as I have the software from Adobe installed on a computer.  Then with the book downloaded and readable on the computer I can close the ADE software and plug in the JetBook, which will allow me from inside of the ADE software to move the ebook to the JetBook reader.

    Normal copy paste to the reader will not work due to the DRM implementation.  The book will not be readable unless transferred from computer to JetBook with ADE.

    Sound correct?

    Yes, that's the idea. You are also correct that copy/paste won't work with

    DRM-protected ematerial.

    Here's a 'shortcut' approach.

    You can plug in the JetBook and get the computer to recognize it. Then,

    open your Internet connection with Penguin, choose either format, and then

    get the download process started. ADE, if installed properly, will open

    'automagically' and go and get the ebook in the format you've specified.

    ADE should recognize the JetBook when it opens, and if all goes well, then

    you'll be able to transfer the ebook to your JetBook. Don't forget to

    close ADE before you pull the plug on the JetBook, and then wait until the

    JetBook had finished processing new content before you disconnect it

    logically from your computer. If you don't, you'll corrupt the ebook and

    it won't work.
