Creative Cloud fails to update (Error code 191)

As the title says, the Creative Cloud app keeps failing to update. I first tried troubleshooting it with the guide for this specific error code, but nothing worked. Tried reinstalling the app and even using Adobe's cleaning tool, and nothing worked; the error kept showing up. Also tried repairing Windows 11, and that didn't work either. So I contacted support, and two different agents remotely connected to my PC, and neither of them could fix the issue or figure out what was going on.

As a little test, I decided to use a different PC, this time a laptop with Windows 11 as well and in that one, Creative Cloud needed an update, and it updated without issues. So I decided to go to the about tab in the app on both PCs and put them side by side, and strangely enough, both my main PC (the one with the issue) and the laptop are in the same version of the app and everything else below. (At the time of making this post)

So maybe this could be some sort of bug where it keeps thinking it needs to update when it is already updated?

I posted this issue on Reddit, and so far, two other people are also experiencing this issue.

Whatever is causing this issue, hopefully, Adobe becomes aware of it and fixes it.

Hey Adobe when this many people have the same problem due to your paid software product being faulty and buggy, your job is to fix it, and promptly, not to offer ridiculous and convoluted workarounds!!

So, even tho Adobe is aware of the issue, they decide not to fix it for those people that do not want storage dictatorship or cumbersome back and forth switching nonsense? Bravo!

It seemns like that. Even after trying makeshift solutions that don't work for everyone, still no fix after at least 6 months of this happening.

Change those settings to C is not a long term workable solution for me as I have very limited space on my C drive.
This started occuring for me today after I got the latest update of Windows.
Is the issue a bug in Creative Cloud? Or something to do with Windows? Creative Cloud had been updating just fine until I installed the latest windows.

The error code in the logs is:

@michaell49322542

just change when you want to update. when that's done, change those settings.

I just spent a pile of time going through all the possible fixes that were listed in the various threads here but nothing worked.  Finally, I checked the version numbers and noticed that I am already on Version 6.7.0.278 which appears to be the latest version: https://helpx.adobe.com/ca/creative-cloud/release-note/cc-release-notes.html  Is it possible that I am being offered an update that doesn't exist?

For reference, this is a fresh install of Creative Cloud straight from the Adobe site.  It installs correctly and then on first launch it shows that it needs to do an update but fails with Error Code 191.  Everything else appears to be functioning normally.

Hi Nathan, FWIW my CC version number is currently also 6.70.0.278. It did not change after the update ran successfuly. Somewaht unexpected behaviour since updates do generally adjust the verison number even if only by the minor digits. Maybe Jeffrey can comment on that to clarify what we should expect the version number to be after running the update.

I discovered that weeks ago.  What I think is going on is when the thing does a version check it's throwing the error.  They actually haven't pushed an update to the CC app since this began.

I was able to solve this by changing the setting per Jeffrey_A_Wright's instructions in "System/Storage/Where new content is saved" from E: to C: drive

Then quit the Creative Cloud app, restarted it, retried the update and it went through without a hitch!

Thanks @Jeffrey_A_Wright for the solution!

I am having this same issue, Checked the advanced saved settings and all mine were already set to c:, i only have one drive on this syste, I've tried updating under admin login and user login both through same error, tried downloading CC installer and it installs but when opening Creative cloud the same error is shown. Ran through the trouble shooting steps on Error 191 causes installation failure on Windows and none of that made any difference.

When I first reported this, Adobe confirmed that my CC app is the current version.  I just wonder if it's throwing this error when the app doesn't need updating?

Thank you, @Abraham_Fernandez7834 and everyone, for your patience with this new occurrence of Error 191 while installing the Creative Cloud Desktop application on Windows 11.

A new potential solution has been identified that has allowed some people to resolve this error. Please try the following steps to adjust the Advanced Storage Settings on Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings: Press Windows + I or click the Start menu and select Settings.
  2. Go to System → then click Storage.
  3. Scroll down and select Advanced storage settings.
  4. Click Where new content is saved.
  5. Use the dropdown menus to choose the C: drive for:
    • New apps
    • New documents
    • New music
    • New photos and videos
    • New movies and TV shows
  6. Click Apply after making your selections.
  7. Install the Creative Cloud Desktop app

Please update this discussion thread with the results. Thank you!

You can also find a video tutorial that explains adjusting the Advanced Storage Settings for Windows 11 at https://youtu.be/qW2ueMwe0JY.

This solution worked for me.

Still no luck here.

All my storage apps were set to C:, so I set them to D:, rebooted, tried CC update - it failed, then set them back to C:, rebooted, and CC app update still fails.

Same error. Purged Adobe from the computer and reinstalled to no avail.

Also elevated all permissions etc..

I should add, the app keeps flickering, like the frames are refreshing.

The same issue—everything works fine on my desktop, but I get error 191 on the laptop, and I can’t update the apps to the latest version either

I'm having the same problem, but apps keep updating so it's not causing any grief.

Still there is a problem somewhere:

- Hitting Repair has the same result.

- Deleting Creative Cloud app impossible unless also deleting all apps, which I don't want to do.

- Downloading the CC installer and trying to run it also yields no change.

I don't think the problem is in my set.

does the cc desktop app itself update?

I really can't tell.  Whenever I open the CC desktop app, the Error 191 thing pops up.  I don't think it does.

I tried logging out and logging in with my administrator account, and ran the freshly downloaded installer, which appeared to be successful. When I went back to my normal user account and opened the app, Error 191 still appeared.

BTW, this is Windows 11 Pro in a domain environment.
