Correct answer Jeffrey_A_Wright

Lydiak83121963 were you receiving this error or a different error for the past week?  We just released Photoshop CC 2015.5 today.

The error above indicates that the installer is unable to write to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2015.5.  I would recommend temporarily disabling any anti-virus or security software which may be preventing the installer from moving files from the temporary directory to this location.

I had these installation errors as well, turning off the Kaspersky anti-virus software helped. But I have to say, that this is a highly unnecessary (new) error and a temporary threat to some users. I highly suggest to fix this issue ASAP, so that no-one has to fiddle around.

BIG thank you to Tazinator, you saved the day. A truck full of beer on its way

For this fix to work, I had to delete the junction I made for the folder.

Damn annoying on the part of Adobe, we should be able to install the damn thing anywhere we want. It worked before, I guess it was simple update, this looks like new install.

Overall, this is travesty on the part of Adobe. You guys need good Quality Assurance team, enough with this waste of time nonsense!

I have had similar Exit code:146 error.

In my case the solution was to check the destination file. It was broken indeed (windows error 0x80070570 the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable). So checking C: drive for errors solved the problem.

The same thing happened to me, do it:

  • Choose Start > File Explorer > This PC.
  • Navigate to the parent folder. For example, Windows (C:) > Program Files > Common Files > Adobe.
  • Right-click the folder, and then choose Properties.
  • In the Attributes section, deselect Read-only and click Apply.
  • Click the Security tab.
  • Under Group or user names, click System and make sure that Full control is selected in the Permissions section. If it is not selected, do the following:
    1. Click Edit.
    2. In the Permissions dialog box that opens, click System.
    3. Under Permissions for System, click the check box in the Allow column next to Full control.
    4. Click Apply, and then OK.

unchecking "read only" for my \appdata\roaming\adobe and \program files\adobe directories fixed this problem for me. I got errors updating Photoshop, Premier, After Effects, and Media Encoder and simply making sure those two directories were writeable solved the problem. I did check my permissions and everything looked ok. My login account and System already had full access to both directories, so that was not an issue for me. It was simply that some directories buried in there somewhere were set read only. Thank you!

I was getting this error as well. Pausing Kaspersky and then running the update allowed it to finally go through.

I can only see this as an installer issue, not a workstation issue. The old 2015 versions installed without any hassle or problem. If its permissions, the permissions for those areas are unchanged from when I ran the old installations so not sure why now it would be a problem. Running as "Administrator" though should have solved it if it were that since Admin typically has end-all be-all permissions on the machine.

The failure seems to happen in the last stages of installation (75%) as when any successful installation hits 80% it starts removing the old version so its definitely something in the post install section.

Meh....release day consumer UAT I suppose...(FIX IT IN PRODUCTION!)

Anyhow...

Workaround for me (albeit a slightly ghetto solution) to get the installs to work finally was creating the following folders manually and re-running the installation. Once I did this, each of the installs completed without issue and the apps fired up without issue as well. Your experience may vary of course. If I cared more and this hadn't worked, I'd have done a close monitor of the install behavior to try and pinpoint the actual hangup but this sufficed and Adobe doesn't pay me to debug their software.

If it weren't obvious by now, yes I work in IT. One might ask why I didn't do all this initially before posting here, simply answered, I try not to do work when I'm at home and I pay Adobe for this stuff to "just work" as most users would say.

If this solution does work for you, please save your thanks, just send money =)

Going to clarify again, I am NOT running any AV or Malware solution that would be interfering with file copies or moves.

As with wdoertell, my C:\Users directory is mapped to another drive with a hardlink junction in NTFS to D:\Users

Im having this same issue for every single update of the updates released today.

Exit Code: 146

-------------------------------------- Summary --------------------------------------

- 2 fatal error(s), 0 error(s), 1 warnings(s)

FATAL: Error (Code = 146) executing in command 'MoveDirectoryCommand' for package: 'AdobePhotoshop17-Core_x64', version:17.0.0.88

FATAL: Error occurred in install of package (Name: AdobePhotoshop17-Core_x64 Version: 17.0.0.88). Error code: '146'

WARN: Failed to move directory 'C:\adobeTemp\ETRCDF0.tmp\1\Preference Settings' to 'C:\Users\<name>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2015.5\Adobe Photoshop CC 2015.5 Settings'

Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, etc etc all throwing the same error code on install and I have no running AV or program that would be interfering with file copies or moves. In addition, even ran the Adobe Cloud client as Administrator and the error persists. When I go to the "adobeTemp" folder, nothing is there.

I'm running Windows 7 SP1 and all the latest patches and hotfixes from Microsoft.

I got the 146 error updating Photoshop and Media Encoder. All other updates worked. Turned off Avast AV per Adobe suggestion and PS and ME updated successfully. Thank you and good luck everybody.

I am getting this same error trying to update Photoshop CC2015.5. I have uninstalled BitDefender and turned off Windows Defender active scan. I am at my wit's end. I even tried uninstalling Photoshop CC 2015 and installing 2015.5. Now I can't even find 2015 to reinstall. Error is as follows:

Exit Code: 146
-------------------------------------- Summary --------------------------------------
- 2 fatal error(s), 0 error(s), 1 warnings(s)

FATAL: Error (Code = 146) executing in command 'MoveDirectoryCommand' for package: 'AdobePhotoshop17-Core_x64', version:17.0.0.88

This is the same error posted in the log file.

Wdoertell thank your for the details.  I especially appreciate the details regarding the anti-virus software title.  Any trends which can be detected will allow us to work with the software manufacturer directly.

For a next step please try installing the update on a newly created local Administrator account.  You can find details on how to set up a new account at Adobe troubleshooting: Creating an admin account in Windows .

I tried installing from the Windows 10 built-in administrator account and received the same message (except, of course, it was C:\Users\Administrator\...). Do I need to mention that on my system "C:\Users" is a junction to "D:\Users"? It shouldn't matter unless the installer routine is somehow bypassing NTFS protocols.
