Can anybody suggest is it still possible to update CS5 from v12.0 to v12.0.4 Adobe classifies this as an old product yet the option to update is still available

You haven't specifed which CS5 flavor/application.  Here's a link to getting updates directly that might have what you are looking for....

    Hi Ned

Thanks for reply. I've just got myself a new system (Win7) and was trying to update my CS5 - the whole suite - from the version on disc to the version I had been used to but although the progress bar proceeds as normal when 100% is achieved the screen is replaced with a red triangle and the message "some of the downloads have failed to install .. correct the errors below". But no errors are indicated and all the downloads have failed. The same occurs if I try to download individual elements. Contacting Adobe via textchat I was informed that CS5 is old software beyond their boundary and to seek answers from the forums. I don't know whether there is a problem with the new system that is preventing the installation or something to do with a second activation that Adobe doesn't permit of. But my licence does permit use on a second machine provided it is not being used on the first as is the case. I could uninstall from the first machine and test if it will update but if it didn't then I am left with "older" versions on both!.
