[Locked] No perpetual licenses are you serious?

I just head that Adobe was planning to abandon its perpetual license in favor of an on line only rental program. At first I thought that this must be a joke. I have been using adobe products for 18 years. Primarily Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign. I am currently an owner of CS 6 Master collection and obviously do upgrade my products and have consistently done so over the years. I am not connected to the internet full time and in fact my work computer is never directly connected to the internet. So how does this work? Is adobe now forcing me to connect to the internet - it seems that this is the case.

In regards to upgrade cycles, I dont want to rent my software and be tied to a rental agreement. I want to upgrade when I choose, not rent my software like some kind of loaner program!

I want to purchase the software then not worry about it. For instance when I travel, I dont want to be bogged down with downloads and upgrades chewing up my bandwidth. I have traveled to many places where internet access is very limited. Downloading from a wireless card in China is painful, I dont want to be bogged down with no software or large megabyte downloads costing me a fortune on the other side of the planet.

Adobe I know that I am just one person and you will probably not listen to me but did someone ask? No one asked me about this. How simple could this be - I want to buy the software then use it when I want where I want, is this too much to ask?

Please let me continue to use this software in the way that I have used it for so long. If others wish to have the creative cloud then great! More power to them, don't alienate your other users. Please provide both alternatives.

Best regards - Matt

You have hit the nail on the head, I use Premiere most and the functional upgrades since Premiere Pro 1.5 have in the main been cosmetic, not essentil just nice to have.

Performance improvements have been another matter but there again they have had to be done to maintain pace with the vieo changes from SD to HDV to full HD (AVCHD and others)

For many Premiere users there are plenty of editing software with perpetual licenses readily available and some like Edius are just as good if not better than Premiere

Adobe Execs that note (already posted comments to Adobe mgmt)

my sentiments exactly.. they have crossed a line with the cloud and in many countries open themselves up to investigation and prosecution ...this cannot be good for shareholders...

I would be surprised if this doesn't lead to legal action against Adobe.

Remember how Microsoft had to pay hundreds of millions to EU for abusing their monopoly position, simply because they bundled Internet Explorer with windows. That was nothing compared to what Adobe is doing with it's monopoly position here.

These threads have been running for some time now and they're just repeating the same things over and over again - what are you hoping to achieve?  Is there a question you want answered?  Are you hoping that if you continue making a lot of noise, they'll change their minds?  Would it even make any difference if they did change their minds now?  What's the result you're actually looking for?

And if they would revive something like the Production Premium pricepoint it would be great! The gap from single application to the whole suite is quite simply MUCH too large

I've heard that from a few people. What kind of price point would you expect, if they brought back the old suite groupings?

About half of the full suite. And then the single app price would have to lower a bit too.

But it still doesn't matter at all, if there is no exit strategy (or perpetual license).

The EU/US difference should be handled too. It's foolish I'll have to use american friends to get a reasonable price

Yeah, I was comparing those prices the other day. A sizeable chunk of the difference is because the US prices are excluding sales taxes, whereas the EU prices are advertised including sales taxes, which are quite high.  I guess there's some cost of additional bureaucratic red tape for each additional country, but some countries were still noteably higher even taking that into account, so some kind of levelling there would help.

"I'll rise to Kevin's defense. By the way, as you'll see from my post much further up this thread, I'm strongly opposed to the changes that Adobe is making and I stand by my earlier criticism of Adobe. But Kevin's position seems perfectly correct to me: it's fine to criticize Adobe here but there's no need for personal criticisms of Adobe's staff or volunteers who monitor this forum."

Thanks camionbleu, and apologies to Kevin.  But don't you think it odd an Adobe heavy-weight focuses any attention on some old guy who won't be around for more than five to ten years?  If that?

Something i wrote struck some Adobe nerve.  Some bit of truth.

Will find and read his blog. Thanks.

Wow, Kevin, you are good.

How come you've not been around in these forums in any recent years?

Hi Kwan,

I've been in the forums, but maybe not this forum. I was the content and community lead (tech writer) for DV products but now I work in support. My posts are chiefly in that area of expertise.

Kwan Parker wrote:

Are you an Adobe employee or someone hired to handle the online backlash?

My guess you're a . . . . eh, someone hired by Adobe to try to make quiet their online forums and make examples of easy targets, like me.

I am an Adobe employee--have been for a few years now. I am not a specialist in shutting down negativity for Adobe, however, I'm pretty good with digital video. You are not a "target," you just made a mistake. It's not a huge deal. I hope we can move on from here. OK?

Thanks,

Kevin

Kwan: The last 5 posts are all yours, and several spaced out before that, none of them adding anything to the discussion. Chill out.

I'm curious what alternative software people have tried so far that they actually like. Corel is really pushing it with a 'Welcome, CS users!' notation on its home page.

I'm an "old dog" & not sure I want to "learn new tricks" (i.e. new software suite - Corel).  And spend another $200 (approximately) too?  As some have written here, I've been with the Adobe products since before it was Adobe - my first product was Pagemaker by Aldus.  I've owned all the creative suites 1 - 6 ... even that one time period that CS5 & CS5.5 came out within a short time of each other.  I admit I have always upgraded, never paid full retail; could never afford that on my dime.  I use these apps to produce things (newsletters, web sites, graphics) for non profit veteran related groups - as a volunteer.  No pay - on a fixed income.  The Creative Cloud will be $600/year, even if they give me the first year at a discount the next year will be full pop.  Sheesh....

CS6 is still for sale:

https://www.adobe.com/products/catalog/cs6._sl_id-contentfilter_sl_cat alog_sl_software_sl_creatives...

and we plan to continue to sell it. This is covered in the FAQ:

Can you tell us how long CS6 will be sold for?

I plan to upgrade from CS5, and am wondering how long I have to buy before you stop selling it.

The response will be 'indefinitely'....but that doesn't mean forever, it really means 'not sure when we'll pull it' (indefinite just sounds better than other terms)

My personal opinion is maybe a year (they won't cut it off until they have good numbers on CC and how well (or not) it's working out)

But if I were looking to buy CS6, I'd do it sooner rather than later. Because the decision to cut it off will likely come quickly and with little to no warning.

My problem isn't Creative Cloud, it is that the pricing structure is balanced wrongly for people who utilise Adobe's software. Particularly if you're a small business or freelancer.

Surely by charging as packages similar to previous incarnations of CS such as Design Premium, Web Premium and Master Collection Adobe would maintain support of the cloud model. £30 per month for Design Premium, £50 per month for Master Collection, then there's a choice for people to go for. £17 for single apps in this economic environment isn't going to get people subscribing to the CC model.

Was very surprised not to get an email from Adobe explaining they were automatically enrolling me back into a 1-year contract... having been an Adobe user since Illustrator 88 and Photoshop version 1 I wasn't best impressed. £47per month is too much paying for a lot of software that won't be used.

Make Creative Cloud more customisable and cheaper and Adobe would get the balance right in my opinion. What was wrong with Design Premium, Master Collection etc.?

Given as it is the last version of the creative tools that we provide a perpetual license for, we have no plans to stop selling it (we actually have specific plans to keep selling it).

This is covered in the FAQ.

Hope that helps...

"on supported platforms" is the key phrase here. I have read elsewhere that they have only committed to supporting the next version of Win and Mac OS. So you might be able to use CS6 as long as you stay with OSX 10.9/Win 9 forever. But as we have seen this past week, what Adobe promises can change overnight, so I wouldn't bet your business on them extending support beyond current OS versions.
