photoshop elements 6 will not open!

Purchased photoshop elements 6.  My dad has that one and recommended it for what I want to do with photos.  It was the only elements in our budget and since my dad uses it, I figured instant help should I need it.
I tried installing it.  It said it was installed, but it will not open.  Tried uninstalling it then reinstalling it and restarting computer.  Did not work.  Tried to run it as an administrator.  Did not work.
I have windows vista 64 bit.
If I can't get this to work, I know I won't be buying anything from adobe ever again and will tell all my friends that want to get into editing their photos to stay far, far, far away from photoshop elements.

Photoshop Elements 6 is an older edition. You just purchased it? It is 4 to 5 years old. It was not designed for 64-bit OS. You may be able to use it in XP compatiblity mode. Have you tried that?

Yes, I just bought it, from a place on Amazon.com.  I don't have money for a newer version.  Yes, I tried running it in compatibility mode.

I am also curious about Michael's question about just purchasing Photoshop Elements or did you have an old copy?  Beyond that do you receive any type of error messages which we can utilize to help identify what might be causing the problem?  If you can also tell us when you receive the error message it would be appreciated as well.

Yes, I just bought it.  I got it at amazon.com because: 1. it's the one I could afford and 2. my dad has it and therefore could provide help as needed (not always good at understanding directions).

No, there is no error message.  I chatted with adobe and they informed me it's not compatible with my computer, in spite of what I was told when I purchased it and in spite of what is written on the box.  I will never purchase anything from them again and am telling all my friends that are getting into photo editing to stay far, far, far away from PSE.
