Question

Understanding the logic of Adobe Remote Update Manager

Hi

I want to deploy Adobe Remote Update Manager (run the exe file as a scheduled task) on all PCs in my organization at a scheduled interval with command line parameter to check for and install any needed updates. I have configured the task to run with this command: RemoteUpdateManager.exe --action=install

I understand from the documentation (Use Adobe Remote Update Manager) that the tool require the Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop app to update some products (Creative Cloud product), while some other products do not require this.

On my virtual test PC (clean installed). I have installed a Creative Cloud Desktop app and one product (InDesign). When I run the tool I see in the log:

10/06/21 07:58:29:911 | [WARN] | | AAMEE | Utilities | RemoteUpdateManager | | | 1276 | Failed to find the UpdaterCore library at (C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\OOBE\PDApp\UWA\UpdaterCore.dll) path

10/06/21 07:58:30:021 | [INFO] | | AAMEE | Utilities | RemoteUpdateManager | | | 1276 | **************************************************
10/06/21 07:58:30:021 | [INFO] | | AAMEE | Utilities | RemoteUpdateManager | | | 1276 | Starting UpdaterCore CheckForUpdate...
10/06/21 07:58:30:021 | [WARN] | | AAMEE | Utilities | RemoteUpdateManager | | | 1276 | Skipping CFU as UpdaterCore not found ...

What is interesting here is that it state that it find some files in the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\OOBE\PDApp\UWA and thus "skipping CPU as updater core not found". I checked and these files truly do not exist on this PC. They do however exist on another PC.

So then I first of all wonder what this mean?

And is it needed?

And if it is needed, what do I need to do to make sure this COMMON library is available on all PCs?

Or is this only available from selected products so that it is OK that not all PCs have this?

Just below this I get some other interesting entries in the log file:

10/06/21 07:58:30:021 | [INFO] | | AAMEE | Utilities | RemoteUpdateManager | | | 1276 | Starting UpdaterCore DownloadUpdates...
10/06/21 07:58:30:021 | [INFO] | | AAMEE | Utilities | RemoteUpdateManager | | | 1276 | Starting HD DownloadUpdates...
10/06/21 07:58:30:021 | [INFO] | | AAMEE | Utilities | RemoteUpdateManager | | | 1276 | HUM library found in parallel path(C:\WINDOWS\ccmcache\h\HUM.dll) ...

In this it look like the tool look for a file called HUM.dll. The problem is that this exist in a cache folder where the SOURCE installation files are location. Not in the folder where the application are actually installed. So since this cache folder will be deleted, I cannot rely on the tool check here.

So what is the HUM.dll and why if this is needed is it not stored in a folder where the application reside or in the common (shared) folder on the PC?

At the end of the log, the product that is installed (InDesign) is being updated. So it look like RUM is working.

So the problem is that I would like to know what I need to have on the PCs and what I need to tick of when I make the packages. So that if I do need the "UpdaterCore" library, I can take actions to prepare all PCs to have this before I start implementing RUM. If I do not need this (if it is only needed for specific cases and is then installed as needed), then I would like to know what so that I know who the tool (RUM) work.
