When displaying PDF in IE9, get blank error message and black display

Frequently when attempting to load PDF pages in IE9, I get an error message box with no text and an OK button and the display of the document is just black.

Usually, if I click Reload enough times, eventually it will display.  What is happening here, and why is there no message in the message box?

I doubt if you facing the issue documented at http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-opens-grey-screen-browser.html

Though, the blank dialog box can be a result of multiple versions of Acrobat and Reader. What is the version of Acrobat/Reader you have, btw?
