Copy-pasting objects are creating new layers instead of pasting on the current layer in Illustrator

Whenever I copy and paste an object in Illustrator, the pasted object creates its own separate layer. This happens despite my having selected the layer the copied object is in, so that the pasted object ends up in the same layer (which doesn't happen). I never used to have this problem before. I've tried the "paste remembers layers" option and I've even uninstalled and reinstalled the app, but this keeps happening. How can I stop this from happening so that I can paste objects into the same layer that the copied objects are? Have I accidentally changed a setting that caused this?

Correct answer Ton Frederiks

Which version of Illustrator?

I cannot replicate it in the most recent version (25.4.1).

Maybe it is time to restart your machine and/or reset the preferences:

Hi there,

Sorry about the trouble. I would like to know if the steps shared by @Ton Frederiks worked for you ? If not, I would request you to share a few more details like:

  • OS and version of Illustrator
  • Is the issue happening while working on a specific document? If yes, could you please share the document with us? You can upload it to the Creative Cloud (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the download link.
  • When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates, or web extensions installed recently.

Also, please try booting the system into Safe Mode (For Mac: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/x-productkb/global/start-safe-boot-mode-mac.html; For Windows: https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode) and share your observations. In Safe Mode, your device starts your system to perform certain checks and prevent third-party software/ services from automatically loading or opening)

I will be looking forward to your response.

Thanks & Regards,

Anshul Saini

Did you turn Off the "Paste Remembers Layers" option?

Yes, I've tried it both with the "paste remembers layers" option turned on and off.
