Hello,
At some point recently I have unknowingly changed my default fill and stroke from black and white to red and blue. I've a rough idea when it happened but no idea how.
I've tried changing the default graphic style. I've tried defining a new graphic style and setting it to persistent. Nothing works. Every time I re-open Illustrator it's back to red and blue.
It's not often I get stuck, I'm an experienced user of many years, but this is driving me insane.
Any ideas anyone?

What document profile are you using? Did you save one at some point? I.e.:

It's across all profiles.

Can you share one of the profile .AI files?

Try changing the default graphic style in the new document profile you are using for new files.

Tried this. Opened, changed, saved, re-start, re-opened ... still red and blue.

Open the Graphic Styles palette. Create a box with the fill and stroke you want. While holding down the Alt key drag the box over the default style thumbnail image in the Graphic Styles palette.

Already tried this. It works for new docs created thereafter until Illustrator is closed and re-open then it back to red and blue

It sounds like something is gummed up in Illustrator's Preferences file. If you don't already know how to do this you can do so by pressing and holding Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) when launching Illustrator.

I'll give that a go 🙂

Than probably some more drastic measures could be taken.
Delete preferences, de-install/re-install....

Resetting the AI Preferences would be the next move I'd make.

I'll try that next 🙂

following.
I'm having the exact same issue, down to the colors of red and blue for the fill and stroke.
I've tried all of the suggestions presented including reinstalling and resetting the preferences and still - red and blue.
It's maddening. gmike@gmike have you had any luck?

Can you show your Graphic Styles panel?

Yes, that looks like a corrupted Default Graphic Style in there.
It is supposed to look like this:
Can you open the Print file from YourUserName/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator <version>/<locale> and check the default style?
If it is not white fill / black stroke can you create a rectangle with a white fill / black stroke and Alt Drag it on top of that Default Graphic Style to change it?
Save the Print file, restart Illustrator and check if the problem is gone with a new file based on Print

Yes, that is the System Lbrary, you need to go to your User library.
In the Finder can you select from the Finder menu > Go and go to the Library?

Go into the New Documents Profiles folder an open Print, modify the default style in the Graphic Styles panel.
It is getting late down here, so I'll continue tomorrow.
Edit: In a normal world that would help, but this is not a normal problem 😞

@Ton Frederiks I was able to change the default graphic style in that print.ai file that you reference, however, upon opening a new document, using the print present, a new document still has the red/blue.
This is after following the instructions from @Anubhav M above where all preferences and settings have been reset.

@Jen McFerrin There were more mentions of this problem today. At least it has the attention of the Illustrator team, so let's hope it gets solved soon.

Good to know! And I agree...
I hadn't realized how crucial these settings were to my workflow until now.
Thanks for the assistance and potential solutions you provided.
