What happened to being able to create custom bevels?

There used to be the ability to create custom bevel profiles, modifying the "Bevels.ai" file in /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator 23/en_US/Symbols.  HOWEVER, when I try to open a file from a year ago, where I created a custom bevel on a 3D object, the file crashes Adobe Illustrator (when I try to move the said object).  I can see the custom 3D bevel, but I can't do anything with the object that it is applied to.  Nor can I create a custom bevel anymore!

So extremely frustrating.  It seems Adobe keeps dumbing-down Illustrator, and the bugs keep increasing.

Ok, I just figured out what's going on (wow, that was frustrating).  I received an answer to this request: We need, again, Custom Bevels in 3D-Extrude & Bevel, please! – Adobe Illustrator Feedback

The problem was where the particular "Bevels.ai" was being modified.  It used to be you could modify the file here:

Modifying this file does NOT work:

    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator 23/en_US/Symbols/Bevels.ai

This is the correct location of the "Bevels.ai" file which needs to be modified (which was shown in the answer above).

    /Applications/Adobe Illustrator CC 2019/Support Files/Resources/en_US/Bevels.ai

Thanks for this.  just tried it and it wouldn't let me save the file. It said I didn't have permission. So I quit it. Changed the permissions and it kind of worked. Kind of not. The location was right but the results were not. I'm fed up with CC's foibles. I think I'll stick with CS6 until Adobe makes it impossible to use.

I had the same problem, where I was not able to modify the "Bevels.ai" file at the correct directory location, directly in Illustrator.  So, I created a "Bevels.ai" file elsewhere, and modified that file fist.  THEN I changed the name of the original "Bevels.ai" file at the correct directory (which I was prompted to enter my admin credentials), THEN I moved the new "Bevels.ai" file to the correct directory (and again I was prompted for admin credentials).  After I did all that it worked.

Still no one answered the first and main question.

It's in the documentation: How to create 3D objects in Illustrator

That "documentation" does NOT show how to create custom bevels.  Just LAST YEAR (2018) we used to be able to create custom bevels, through creating a new Symbol and then modifying the "bevels.ai" file here: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator 23/en_US/Symbols.  Then that new custom bevel profile would appear in the 3D-Extrude & Bevel-Bevel list.  Now only the default bevel profiles show up.

There is NO corruption to any of my files.  I've created new files and tried the same thing.  It's not me and not my computer, it's Adobe and Adobe Illustrator.

Are these 3D files also including symbols?

Some symbol technology has changed over the last couple of years and I'm wondering if that's a root source of your issue? Maybe need to strip out some elements to see where the file breaks.

As Monika mentioned, if you can share a file for others to test with, that would be a big help.

The object was a simple square/rectangle, which I 3D/Extrude & Bevel'ed into a pyramid, using a custom Bevel profile I created from a Symbol... a 45-degree angle.  I open the file now, and I can see the pyramid, but can't do anything with it (if I try, Illustrator crashes).

I was using the pyramid as a template to create an info-graphic.  I've resorted to creating a pyramid with Dimension and screen-capturing the oriented-in-a-particular-way pyramid, and then pasting that into my new file as a template.  It used to be so easy...

So it sounds like it is just one file though? It may be the symbol technology changes that mark-heaps referred to or it might just be a corruption in the particular file.

I am not having a problem either. Is it one specific file that you created that you are having a problem with or several? If one, perhaps, as suggested, it somehow got corrupt.

I haven't seen issues with my own old bevels files.

Corruption may o course happen, but it's not a generic issue in this case.

If you like to have someone check your file, upload it to Dropbox or the like and post a link here.
