I was finally able to do it using the combine shapes tool, it shows a preview of what's going to happen with the shapes and it's really helpful.

I can never get the Expand menu option to show as active when

i select an object.  The expand menu option is always inactive

I'm pretty sure it needs to be an object that it makes sense to expand.  For instance, take any object and do a Radial Repeat operation on it (it's that last icon on the righthand toolbar).  Now Expand should be active.  Expand will convert it to an object that can no longer be altered by the Radial Repeat option.

To be honest, I'm just a new user like yourself.  I learned these things by doing the tour that is under the little question mark on the top menu.  You might want to do the same.

You should be able to expand any object that is a closed path or a path that has a stroke width without using the radial tool.

I think you have to choose Outline Text from the text tool on the right-hand toolbar first.
