It's been a while since this happened – a month – but now having the pasteboard on 1 page of ~400 suddenly extend out one side. I immediately stopped work and IDML'd it. It did not change. Now will delete this one page and replace/reconstruct the page, and perhaps avoid using the pasteboard for idea collection going forward. But this is bizarre and problematic.
And @Robert at ID-Tasker, could your tool help identify the potential source of this issue?normal ID file above
Exported to IDML and resaved as ID
Thanks for mentioning - but you don't need IDT for that.
Just go to this spread, hit Ctrl+A - Select All - your selection will extend to the far right - where there will be a single point selected - press Shift and do area selection of everything else on the spread - only this one point on the right should be left selected - press Delete key.

You probably checked this, but just in case:
Are you sure you simply didn't change the page dimensions accidentally?
EDIT: Oops I didn't realize it's indeed the pasteboard that got expanded and not the page itself.

While we're at speculation, how about an unchecked "allow pages to shuffle" with debris from a temporarily wider spread of 3 or more pages.

Where would I find the option to check/uncheck "allow pages to shuffle"? What debris is likely important for finding issues - would that be more text, or images, or something else?
One thing noticed is that when placing images that are PNGs, having one or sometimes not one but two on page/spread causes or is linked to that issue with erratic blacks.
Something that often sends me beyond the pasteboard is placing images that are far lager than the board. And I've tried the fittting function - which seems totally unresponsive. Sharing as perhaps it's relevant.
This thread is hard to follow now -

Page shuffling options are in the Pages Panel menu. Gemerally you want to allow shuffling so you can rearrange and or insert/delete pages and have the new order properly switccing from left to right if you change from an odd to even count or vice versa with some change anywhere other than at the last page. Turning off shuffling allows you to keep a gropup of pages in a specific order and arrangement.
You can set shuffling globally and for indidvidual spreads (where you are more likely to want to make an exception and turn it off).

A quick point about this – I very rarely add a just single page and instead almost always 2 for a spread (because the chapters are designed to always open on a fresh 2-page spread, never the last chapter on the left), in which case there's no switching of L and R that occurs. Could this mean that I may want to turn shuffling off?

Also, I wonder if changing the size of the image in Photoshop prior to placing might help for those that are very large. InDesign respects the saved dimensions, and dimensions and resolution are an inverse relationship, so you can half the length and width values by doubling the resolution without resampling and not change the actual image data one iota.

I wasn't exactly aware that the relationship is the inverse (counterintuitive, yes - always thought increasing res. would enlarge it). Some of the archival image files are huge files. So try increasing their resolution further to avoid these giant resizing tasks jutting off pasteboards? I suppose the other option is to do a TF and place within, which, however, for me I still have to use the Direct Select tool to resize – does that negate the benefit to what you're suggesting to do?

No need to turn it off as adding two pages at a time behaves the same. I can't speak fior the others, but about the only time I turn shuffling off is for special spreads -- and the example I forgot to include would be a three-or-more pager for a gatefold.

Do you know you can place and scale simultaneously by holding down the mouse button and dragging the frame to size as you place an image?
