I am having the same problem suddenly out of the blue as others have said. I can no longer see previews of ID files created 2019 to current (not exactly sure of date, but seems like 2018 and older still have it). I am using ID 18.2.1.455 on a Mac running Monterey 12.5.1. I have not recently updated my ID or OS. "Always save preview" has always been checked in my prefs and I've tried turning it off and back on, restarting the program, restarting my Mac (all the usual trouble shooting. Quite the mystery. I hope Adobe will address this!

I can also confirm that whenever I add type to any of my InDesign documents, a preview in the Finder (MacOS) doesn't appear. The preview appears in Bridge, as well as on InDesign's Home screen; whether or not there is any type in the document. Removing type from an existing document, then saving it seems to allow the preview to show up.

The mythical 18.2 release discussed in previous posts must have never been rolled out in my underserved area...Chicago.

For the mods telling me it was released, I checked daily.

Alas, I just installed 18.2.1 and the problem still exists.

A new document with text and photo yields the same "Preview not saved."

We were promised follow-ups.

It's ridiculous!... Adobe has the key to fix it... because if you point to 2 indesign jobs at the same time you can see the preview... that doesn't give them a clue...?

I tried several tips that were given here and none of them work for me. I saved the document in lines without live text and it was the same. The only thing I do to solve the problem is when I select more than one art at the same time and they are displayed.

Unfortunately, I also do not have any time to continue testing this issue. It's annoying but luckily it is not a serious issue with the performance of InDesign and execution of InDesign projects. We can only hope that future verions of InDesign and/or MacOS this issue will be rectified!

It's definately a Adobe issue, ever since the 18.1 update. I've had Adobe remote in 4 times, delete every adobe app file, library, file, all my old versions of software so completely wipe Adobe off my mac and start from scratch. Still happens, updated to Ventura, still happens. Between this and losing Pantone colors, i'm starting to miss Quark.

Same issue here, "preview not saved" though in settings everything should be right.

MacOS 13.2.1 and Indesign 18.1.

More research. I found this

I ran several tests and have discovered if the ducument has a live font, it will not show a preview. I started with removing old preference files, then created a new document with only graphics. Saved file and preview shows. Next created a new doc and added live text. Saved doc and NO PREVIEW. Created a new doc, added live text, but outlined the fonts and (changed them to curves). Saved the doc and preview works. Then opened the same doc with a working preview, added live text. saved doc. and no preview.

So after spending time on APPLE support because i found Adobe claimed it was an Apple Issue, I ran these tests and it is clearly an ADOBE ISSUE.

I encourage you all to reproduce these tests yourself and let Adobe know about it and maybe they will get it fixed for us all.

I ran this test too and found much the same results. Note that for me at least, at “preview not saved” is only a problem when viewing InDesign (ID) files in a FINDER window. Preview always shows when viewing InDesign files in Bridge.

So, here’s what I found during my y test:

  • If the ID file contains only an image(s), preview shows.
  • If the ID file contains a font (with or without an image), preview does not show. HOWEVER – there were a few exceptions to this – for a couple of the test docs with a font, preview DID show (e.g. Acumin Pro, Minion Pro). I tried to find some common denominator (font type, foundry, designer, etc) first to the fonts that previewed, then to the ones that didn’t – to no avail. Just too many variables, and too time consuming for me to chase that rabbit.  But maybe Adobe has the resources to run with it. Are they even still working on this??

I'm having the same problem using Ventura 13.2.1. And yes, my preferences have "Always Save Preview images with Documents" turned on, and it's also on when saving documents. I've tried toggling it, I've tried a dirty save, but nothing brings back the preview for any of my InDesign documents. Sometimes a new document gets a preview, but most often, it doesn't. Can't figure out what triggers it.

Is this still broken, yet marked solved with a "correct answer?"

Please advise if a fix is in the works. Most of us have provided screenshots, sample files, etc.

Good question; WHY is it marked as the correct answer? It clearly is not.
How many files need to be sent?

I have tried all of the "so-called answers," and still Nada. Old file, New file, makes no difference.
As soon as a font, any font OTF or TT, is introduced to the document, it will not preview. Regardless if that font is inside of a placed PDF or in a Document where the fonts or turned to outlines. No preview.
ONLY a document with a placed image will create a preview... although a low res preview, but still a preview.

This is also happening to me with InDesign 18.1 on a Mac with Monterey 12.5.1. When I create a test file with blocks of colors only, I get a preview but as soon as I add any text in either a supported or unsupported font, I get Preview Not Saved.

Hi together,

I have similar issues on my German Windows 10 system.

And I can recreate the issue in the following way:

In the File Explorer ( Window's "Finder" ) just select an InDesign  document where previews are stored inside.

All's well, you can walk through all previewing pages of the document.

Now switch to a document where no previews are stored inside. Of course nothing's showing up as preview.

Go back to the document you just previewed. Surprise: No preview of the document!

Third document is showing a preview of four pages:

Second document has no preview stored inside. So, no preview is showing:

And here comes the bug. From this moment on I cannot see any previews from any of my InDesign documents; just like someone unchecked a button for previewing InDesign documents:

Attached all the three InDesign documents. One without any preview information stored inside. Watchout, and do not try to preview it if you dare! Plus a video showing the issue in InDesign's Open document dialog window.

Maybe it's the same on the Mac?

At least on my Windows 10 machine I can definitely recreate that bug.

In the Open document dialog it could be safe to test this, because the next time you open the dialog it's back to "normal". Until you come accross a document where no preview is stored inside.

Hope, this helps…

Hi @Laubender,

Thanks for sharing the video and the screenshots. They are helpful. I have attached your video to the current bug logged for this issue. Could you please also share the InDesign file with me so that I can escalate them to the team for investigation?

The team is trying to investigate the situation and assist you and our customers.

Thanks,
