Buffer zones around text boxes

I've been using inDesign for a year and a half to design my small newspaper. Somehow, my finger hit something and it has changed two things that I cannot for the life of me figure out how to undo.

First, it has added buffer zones around every text box, photo & photo caption. So, for instance, I cannot place a story right below a headline because it wants a 1/4-inch buffer. Same with photo cutlines.

Second, I can no longer see the outline of my text boxes. This happened when I tried various ways to undo the buffer zone issue.

I know there's an easy answer to this, but cannot find it.

(This happened to me once before 8 months ago and there was something I had to unclick on every single text box in the upper right hand corner of the top toolbar. That box is no longer there and I've spent way to much time trying to undo what my fingers have done by accident.)

Thanks for any help.

    Hi cinwryter:

What you are calling "the buffer zone" sounds like text wrap to me. Open the panel with Window > Text Wrap. With nothing selected anywhere, click the first button on the top row to turn text wrap off as the default for new frames. Repeat for any existing frames.

To see frame edges, choose View > Extras > and enable Show Frame Edges. If you still don't see them, try View > Screen Mode > Normal. If you still don't, disable View > Overprint Preview.

also … to  inhibit  this  from  happening  in  the  future … try  saving  your  current  settings  in  a  custom  workspace.  might  need  to  test  your  workspace … making  certain  it  remains  true.
