Can't place EPS. Can't open files with EPSes.

Community Beginner ,
Sep 19, 2022 Sep 19, 2022

I can't open files with EPSes. It me an error that a plug in is missing but doesn't say the plugin and doesn't let me open the file to figure out the error.

When I create a new file, it won't place EPSs. Just turns the box into a text box.

Now I have hundreds of files I can't even open.

What's up with that?

What version of ID? What operating system? What is the exact error message?

ID 17.4. Mac OS 12.6. Everything up to date.

"Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application."

Some files are working. Some aren't. I tried to recreate this file that wouldn't open but ID would not import the EPS. Not sure if ID is just suddenly not supporting older versions of EPSes or what.

This is very aggrevating because we rely on UPC codes in EPS format. If some work and some won't, it would be nice to know how to fix this problem with the ones that aren't working. But I can't fix things if I can't even open the InDesign files.

Where are these files stored? Are they in a cloud service such as Dropbox? If so, make sure everything is fully sync'ed to your harddrive by turning off any smart sync type of feature.

Here's the thing. If it could not access a linked file, it would have allowed me to open the file with a broken link. I have had that happen before. It would not even open the file with the link to the EPS.

So, all of your files, including the links have cloud only turned off? Can I see a screenshot of the folders?

No. You will have to trust me when I say they are synced.

I have had sync issues. I have had missing files. They always open but with errors. The files that did open were on the same drive but were newer EPS files.

I need to know if the latest updates of ID is causing errors with certain types of EPS files and how to fix the links in an ID files when I can't open file.

You're the first person to report it. Try this: Copy the entire project folder from your OneDrive folder and put on your desktop. Does it open there?

Files on OneDrive showing synced. Still the same error when all the files are moved to the desktop. Just sounds to me like there are issues with some legacy EPS formats.

Just tried to open the EPS in Illustrator. No graphic. Tried to convert it to text, too.

Just opened another one of the old EPS files. No problem. It might be that one file. Even if it is that one file, there's got to be a better way for ID to deal with a corrupted/outdated linked file than to make the entire ID file unopenable.

You can try changing your preference for checking the links before opening the file.

Uncheck it. That way InDesign will not check the links. I don't know if it will fix anything but it's an easy thing to try.

> Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application."

That's the error message you would get when trying to use File > Open  on an unsupported file format. To put a .eps file in an InDesign document you need to use File > Place...

Sorry, I hadn't read the whole thread when I posted. I see you are trying to open .indd files with properly linked .eps content. You might want to also check to be sure there are no .idlk files in the folder with those tht don't open. That would also throw that error message.

Do not use EPS in any way. Use PDF/X-4 instead.

It seems that the text frame uses the EPS code. InDesign does not see it as EPS file, but as text file.  Either something is wrong with the file header, or it is not a valid EPS file. But if you use PDF/X-4 instead, the problem is solved anyway.

I just opened another file with an EPS. It worked. Which is it?

These vague error messages are useless and they do not fix the problem that ID won't even let me open files.

I need specifics on how to fix this problem that doesn't involve me doing weeks of work to because Adobe suddenly dropped file import options and made files unaccessible.

I also have these same EPS files linked to Illustrator files. If this happens to Illustrator, it could stall out manufacturing while we recreate files because the old ones won't open.

What good is telling me to use a PDF if I can't even open the files to change the linked EPS to a PDF? (I saw you were using this as a stock answer for a lot of other questions. It doesn't help.)

EPS is an old outdated file type from last millenium.

Where do the EPS come from?

We create barcodes as EPS files and have had no issues for years doing this. Well, until today. We exclusively use vector files in our manufacturing graphics. Signage, specialty printing, and manufacturing processes use EPS files all the time. Print is still around.

You should update you workflow and learn modern workflows. When you claim that it is your workflow, you must expect problems until you modernize your workflow.

BarCode creators cause often problems with fonts.

Could it be, that the barcodes contain T1 fonts?

One old barcode worked, though. If it was the T1 fonts, then that file would have had the same error. It doesn't help when ID won't open the file at all. Being unable to open the ID to fix the links means recreating files. If it had opened them and gave me an error, I could have worked with that.
