Character Palette drop-down menu doesn't expand fully

I have an issue with the character palette only displaying a few fonts at a time in a smallish drop-down window. When I have the character window floating in my workspace and select a typeface, the drop-down menu only opens to show 24-25 fonts in the window with the font preview turned off. If I activate the font preview, it will only display 18-19 typefaces at a time in the drop-down preview. In the past, the drop-down preview would fill my screen from top to bottom--so if my palette was at the bottom of my screen, the drop-down would extend all the way to the top, and vice versa. I should also mention this issue also occurs in the drop-down charcter selection in the top menu bar as well.

This problem occurs using InDesign CC 2019 but does not occur using CC 2018. Incidentally, it also occurs using both Illustrator CC 2019 and CC 2018.

I am using a 2017 iMac with Mojave 10.14 and all of my Creative Cloud software is current with the latest updates.

So, to recap, the issue is not the pointsize of the font selection drop-down on my screen but the size of the scrollable drop-down menu in the character window.

Thanks in advance for any advice or tips.

    Correct answer Steve Werner

The correct answer is that there is no way expand the length of the panel in InDesign CC 2019. You would have to move backwards to an earlier version if that's important for your workflow.

What was previously marked was WHY it happened (since we don't know what was part of the engineering team's process), and workarounds which you found unsatisfactory.

Why is this marked as answered? The comment marked as answered is not really an answer. I originally asked how to get my CC 2019 character drop-down window to be as large as it is on CC 2018. I'm still not convinced that CC 2019 only displaying about 20 fonts is not some sort of defect or glitch with my experience since I don't recall it behaving this way before the past couple of days.

Thanks, Steve. I just wanted to find out why it doesn't show as many fonts in the list as CC 2018. What is the reason?

Is my version of CC 2019 defective or is there something wrong with my system? OR has Adobe decided that with CC 2019 they will restrict the amount of typefaces that can be viewed in the drop down menu. I don't recall there being an option to change the size of the drop down window in CC 2018. It always extended the full distance of the workspace, There was no option of changing it to only show a handful of fonts, unless maybe you changed the preview size of the fonts themselves in the window. And, if you had a smaller workspace, then yes, InDesign would naturally display fewer fonts due to the limitations of the workspace on your screen. But otherwise, InDesign CC 2018 and every version before it, displayed the typeface drop down window the full vertical space that was available in the workspace.

I'm still looking for a definitive answer that states yes, this new way of showing only a few typefaces regardless of your screen size, workspace size, etc., is totally normal with the CC 2019. Adobe has indeed changed the way the drop down menu behaves. There is nothing wrong with my version of CC 2019.

I totaly agree that the menu must be resizable in at least length!

The font menus were redesigned in InDesign CC 2019 and Illustrator CC 2019 to support other previewing features, including the ability to preview Adobe Fonts (formerly Typekit fonts) where are not yet installed. And you can turn them on without going to a website.

When these menus were designed for the first time, they are not resizable so I get about the same number of fonts displayed as you see.

I think if you want a resizable font menu, you'll need to make a request for it at the InDesign UserVoice website here:

    Feature Requests/Bugs

It doesn't bother me because I prefer to search for fonts by typing their names in the Font field, and a filtered list of fonts beginning with the letters I'm typing appears. Like if I'm searching for Roboto it looks like this:

That's my tip for you until they create resizable lists again.

Thanks for the reply, Steve. I'm not asking for a resizable window (but that would be a great feature), but merely trying to figure out why InDesign 2019 is only displaying a few fonts instead of extending the drop-down window the full vertical length of my workspace as it does in InDesign 2018 and has done as long as I can remember.

It's frustrating that I can't view more than 19 or 20 fonts in the drop-down menu in CC2019 while CC2018 behaves in the way I'm describing--where it opens the drop-down menu the full length of the workspace.

Either way, you'll need to make a feature request for it to be considered by the product managers. That will get their attention. If others vote for your request, then it's more likely to be implemented.
