Hello,
I've installed InDesign CS5 and it's running terribly when I have graphics placed, especially at high resolution display. It's choppy, sticky - to much to even work with. I've thrown out the SavedData and InDesign Defaults, but it doesn't help. Has anyone else experienced this problem, or have any ideas what I can do. CS4 runs fine.
Thanks,
Adam

That did it for me too! Wow. What was weird is that if I had an image on high quality preview, everything was jerky, not just moving the image. For example if I grabbed a text box. When Peter first suggested this, I thought that sounded like a logical place for the issue but disregarded it for the above reason. That live draw must be a 100 fps constantly running in the background deal, so everything is effected. Well, I'm in great shape now - thanks everyone.

OK, let's complicate this and move back to case unsolved: I had the same issue with a placed CMYK EPS photo, and it had nothing to do with LSD (LOL). Converting the photo to PSD solved the problem.
I'd say the issue has something to do with EPS preview handling.

I've been running very smooth since deselecting Live Screen Drawing. I had problems with EPS, PSD and AI images. My system just choked, and moved into a sloooooow sticky motion when it had LSD.
I'm not sure, but I think I heard my iMac say, "Whoa....Dude...Can't we all just get along?" Then it said, "Got any Jimmy Hendricks in iTunes?"

Same here. Maybe I'll try live drawing with the next update. Now I don't even think about it. I still put on high quality display mostly with zero issues.

I have been struggling with this for weeks. I have been so unhappy with the upgrade. The Live Screen Drawing was the problem. Turning it off really helped. Thank you so much for sharing that.

That has made an amazing difference on my machine. Wow, I will avoid that feature like the plague until something changes.

well, that's one "new feature" we can write off...
I'm about ready to write off "Content Grabber" because it's just awkward and keeps getting in the way of simply selecting the box and not its content. Especially on smaller boxes or when zoomed out.
I'm also not thrilled that "Background Tasks" works for PDF generation, but not for print spooling.
80% of my waiting time is sending jobs to the Fiery. I for some reason presumed that ID would off-load that just like it does PDF generation now.
Oh well. I guess that will be another 600 bucks and 18 months!

Yea, I'm not too keen on the Content Grabber either. Too many years of grabbing an image in the middle may be too much to overcome at this point. With the content grabber circle thing I'm constantly moving the image when I want to move the image box.
How do you turn that off?

Took me a while to get used to the content grabber, but I did, and I rather like it now.

It was only when we started talking about it here that I realized what the "New Round Thingy" was for in the middle of images.

It reminds me of an old manual transmission: easier to slip into and out of gear on accident.
I'd rather have a nice, tight transmission, myself.
This is a precision sport we're engaged in, after all...
By the way, to diable, go to "View: Extras: Hide Content Grabber"

We tend to call it a donut around here.

I think I have this same problem with anchored objects (either text or graphics). Drag it, and the surrounding text frame disappears, to only reapenr when you release the mouse button. No problem with free-floating graphics. MacBook Pro Early 2008, 4GB of RAM, standard video card. (Reported to Adobe).

Sorry for my english, I can't develop.
I have the same problem.
But you must switch off (desactivate) the option :
Preferences > File handling > Always save preview image with document.
I think it is a bug.

Really people this is a serious problem in my opinion. And it affects both Mac and PC versions... Here in my company I was responsible for evaluating the CS5 suite so we could buy it for 3 iMacs in the creation departament... Beacuse of this problem, and the installation issues (which I found the solution, but it is not perfect and gave me a lot of headaches) we're not buying CS5 and sticking to CS4.
If they release a good patch then we could consider... but until then...
See ya!

Yeah I think I'm having the same problem. It gets choppy and frustrating to work with especially when moving things around. I found that checking delay live drawing, setting hand tool to better performance and tweeking display performance helps out a bit but its still not smooth as I want it to be. Working on a intel core 2 duo 2Ghz 4GRAM OSX10.6.4 which does meet the requirements but was not expecting this sluggishness having using cs4 for quite some time now. My question is is there a memory allocation setup preference in IDcs5 same as you would do in PS so as to optimize performance? I tried searching but had no luck.

HI,
Did you re-creating the preferences.
To re-create the InDesign/InCopy preferences file:
If you are unable to invoke the Reset Preferences dialog, or prefer to preserve your preferences in case they are not the cause of your issue, here are manual steps for resetting the preferences.
InDesign:
Also please try below mention steps:
If the problem is NOT resolved with the solution above, proceed to Solution 2.
Note: Users who do not receive .indd files from users of the CJK versions of InDesign can function perfectly fine without the SING component.

Wow. Not that is something the average user doesn't know.
Luckily turning off quick rendering or whatever it was has helped me a
lot.

Swapnil,
Your response is in no way related to the probelm here. If you can't add more than a reference to a knowledgebase article, especially one that does not apply, perhaps it would be better for you not to repond at all.

So sorry. I didn't understand.

Empired, my comment was directed to Swapnil, not to you. Turning off Live Screen Draw is the recommended first step. Removing the SING folder and replacing your prefs won't do a thing for this problem.

Hi Peter,
Thank you for your response, I appreciate your knowledge towards the application however there is no harm in trying the steps which are mentioned. I don't think so they are going to harm the computer. Secondly knowledgebase article are to help we pepole only. Also as evrybody knows these are technical things, and anything can go wrong at given time so some times no one can actually say as to why it happend and solutions are derived through hit and try game.. Evry cure dosen't have a direct medication. You have to try different things..
Anyways once again thank you very much for you time in replying me..
Cheers,
Swapnil

Swapnil,
Wasting time trying things which have no connection to the described problem is harmful!
Peter is correct, that there is no logical reason why the step you describe will solve the problem...

Hi!
I had the same problem. Go to preferences > Interface >"Live screen drawing" NEVER.
