Question

Document with many inline images and metadata captions

I need to create a document with many images that should move up-and-down with text. The paragraph are separated with empty lines. The images are between paragraphs.

I cannot simply make these images inline, because they should have captions, and captions should be generated from file metadata.

How would you create such a document?

Images could be grouped with captions; then anchor the group.

Thanks a lot, Mike. But the whole point of my initial post is: how is it possible (and is it possible at all?) to make an image travel up-and-down with the text and, at the same time, to have an updatable dynamic caption for this image.

Maybe DataMerge both the images and the captions?

1. In Bridge check and correct the capitions and if they are in the correct fields.

2. In InDesign you can either create or later create per command the capitions from the meta data. You have to upset for each document from the object menu.

You can coose between dynamic and static captions. Dynamic captions are linked to the actual meta data. If the image changes or its meta information it will be automactically updated but it is difficult to get a typographically good result. Therefore I prefer the static captions which draw its information to the point in time when you place the images. But it does not recognize changes of the linked image.

You have first to import image and have its caption in a separate frame.. Group them, coppy them into the clipboard and paste it into the text threat where you want to reside them.

I would recommend to use a different paragraph style for thise paragraphs where you paste the images into with an automatic leading cotnrary for the other paragraphs with a fixed leading.

It's best to produce Paragraph Styles with "space after" rather than carriage returns as line spaces in text.

You can "anchor" images to text so they travel with the text.

Yes, I can anchor an image to a specific position of text. But as far as I know, this means that it won't be possible to update it's live caption, right?

"<...> captions should be generated from file metadata."

And of course, captions should be updatable. That is, I need keep an option to update them when necessary.
