Error? when packaging

Hello,

When I package the indesign file, I see this little triangle warning sign, but I really don't know what the problem is.

Anyone can explain if I should be worried?

It's just warning you that your images are RGB. Once upon a time we delivered files to printers in CMYK only, but with modern color management it is now preferable to deliver RGB and let the printer do the conversion.

 

You can safely ignore the warning.

Usually, you see that when you created a CMYK document, (Edit > Transparency Blend Space menu) and your PDF export settings are set to convert to RGB. It could be the other way around too.

I see that I have created the document in CMYK. The printing company told me to keep the file in CMYK and only leave imags in RGB, because they would convert the images into CMYK on their side. Since they need INDD file, this may not be an issue, I'm thinking?

Are you sending the printer a PDF in addition to the InDesign file? If so, I would use modified PDF/X-4 settings.

 

If your transparency space is CMYK and you are sending the InDesign file via packaging, you should be OK since the printer will override your settings. However, I would fix it anyway since it is never a good idea to assume when it comes to printing.

 

BTW, do you know why the printer needs your InDesign file and not just a PDF?

I think I will include the PDF anyway, though it wasn't particurally required.

When you say fix it anyway, how do we fix this?

 

I thought that the printer needs the indesign file because they would convert all images to RGB on their side. (Does this make sense?)

The image conversion happens in their prepress software and can be done from the PDF. Unless they specifically ask for .indd I would recommend against sending anything other than PDF.

You can fix the transparency blend space error by going to Edit > Transparency Blend Space and choosing the other option.

After you output as a PDF/X-4, save your InDesign file. That should take care of the problem. 

 

Printers often don't want the native files since too many problems can occur when processing them. A printer that requests PDF/X-4--or better yet, gives you PDF/X-4 settings to import*--is a good sign. 

 *This is because the default PDF settings need to be modified to include bleed and often need to include crop and registration marks. I usually like to adjust the image compression settings too.

 

As @Peter Spier mentioned, the printer should be able to work entirely with the PDF. What did the printer actually ask for?

I traced back to the old email correspondane and they only mentioned "We need an open Indesign file with all the links and images. And no PDF file."

 

But since I can include PDF, I will choose PDF/X-4, as you suggested!

I am really sorry.... I keep bump into a new issue...

I'm now trying to package a book, but all of sudden this message shows up, everytime when I reopen the book.

I saved all files before creating a book and packaged them for print. I don't know why I have this message now. This did not happen before...

Sometimes the modified file info between the book and the documents gets out of wack. Usually, you can just update your numbering and it will go away.

It's updating the two menu items above the Update All Numbers menu. 

If it's just a sync issue, it's a harmless update. Watch the page numbers of the chapters to see if they change. 

 

If you made edits that affected the entire book, then you would need to update the TOC.

If you did NOT make any edits, I would be 99.9% sure it's a sync issue.

I did the update of the numbers and indeed it stopped asking me to save changes, thank you very much for helping!

You are wrong. Errors are marked with a stop sign, the triangle is to ignore. Only Adobe should fix it and remove it.

Who and what is wrong?

 

Added: @Willi Adelberger I think you are referring to the original post, which was about a useless error from workflows gone by. However, this sub-thread is about a different warning and should be investigated. 

 

The triangle is not "to ignore", but a warning. If warning is not important (determined by research or experience), then one can ignore it. But don't just ignore it without understanding what it is.
