Hi

Im working on a document that I didn't create and every text box or pic box I draw automatically has a drop shadow added to it. How do I get rid of it. It doesn'tt work just turning off the drop shadow in effects. It just stays!

In your document make sure NOTHING is selected. Choose the Selection tool, and look at the Control Panel.

Make sure the Drop Shadow icon is NOT selected.

Clicking that accidentally can turn on the Drop Shadow effect when NOTHING is selected and set it as the document default.

Hi Vanessa:

weird

You set defaults in InDesign by activating a command with nothing selected. It a common mistake, but easy enough to fix once you understand what happened.

Like Steve, I'm guessing this is a document default issue (meaning only happening in a single file), and his steps above will take care of it. If it ends up being all new documents, you can close all open files and turn it off via Object > Effects > Drop Shadow.
