Figure / Section Numbering

Hi all,

I'm starting a document with multiple sections; A, B, C, D etc...

Every image needs to be captioned with a unique figure number. I have set up a paragraph style and can easily do continuous numbering (Fig 1, Fig 2, Fig 3 etc). However, I want to use the section letter first and automatically restart the numbering at each new section (Fig A1, Fig A2, Fig B1 etc).

Does anyone know a way to do this?

Thanks!

OK, in this case, I'm afraid there is no way to relate Section markers with a numbered list.

So, what I suggest is to fake it:

You can create a paragraph style (let's call it "section") set as a Level 1 numbered list. Use "A,B, C, D..." format.

Then set up your figures paragraph style as level 2 and make it restart after any higher level.

Now, you'll have to include this Section paragraph at the beginning of every section. Type a space or a carriage return a minima.

On my previous example, I placed it out of the page, while touching the edge.

Here where troubles start...

be aware that the order of creation of an object (such as text frame containing your Section paragraph) affects the way lists are running.

So, if you just create these separate (meaning : unthreaded) frames for Section paragraphs while your layout is already set up, it'll be all messy.

So, you must find a way to add this Section paragraph in a way it doesn't break the automatic numbering.

It can be a pain, so I would need to see more about your layout in order to advice.

Hope that helps

Hi

What exactly do you mean by "section"?

As a document "Numbering & Section Option" or as a header defined by a paragraph style?

In the first case, it's possible but will require a little extra work.

In the second case: very easy ^^

Case 1:

Case 2:

Thanks for the reply. It's the document "Numbering & Section Option".
