Has this laptop a touch mode? If yes, could you turn it off?

Windows 10, Windows 11?

My guess is that InDesign is erroneously detects yout laptop is in touch mode.

What you can try in Windows 10:

Backup and remove InDesign's cache, preferences and program data. For the program data you'd need admin rights.

So quit InDesign, restart your machine and go to:

Cached Data:

User > [user name] > AppData > Local > Adobe > InDesign

You should see a Version 17.0 folder there. Backup the folder and remove it, or rename the folder to perhaps Version 17.0-OLD.

Preferences

User > [user name] > AppData >Roaming > Adobe > InDesign

Also here you should see a Version 17.0 folder. Same procedure as above with cached data.

For this you need admin rights: ProgramData

(C:) > ProgramData > Adobe > InDesign

The same with Cached Data and Preferences: You should see a Version 17.0 folder.

Exact same procedure as above with cached data and preferences.

Note: To see the AppData and ProgramData folders make sure that you turned on to see invisible elements in your file system.

After that restart your machine and start-up InDesign.

Hope, that helps!

Hii Thank you so much for your respond!!  I fixed the Touch workspace problem! The problem I still have is that I don't see the >Essential button. I added a screenshot from what I'm seeing right now.
Thank you once again for trying to help out!

Kind regards,

Hi@Dee11234 ,

well, you fixed your workspace problem to an extend only.

There should be several default workspaces available, also the [Essential] one.

That said, all the default ones are available as XML files in InDesign's application folder.

I'm with a German version of InDesign 2022 so my country code is de_DE, yours could be different, perhaps en_EN or en_US, but basically the path to the default preference files is this:

> Adobe InDesign 2022 > Presets > InDesign_Workspaces > de_DE >

In my German version they are named in German:

The Essential workspace is named "Grundlagen.xml" with my German version.

My recommendation to reset InDesign preferences as I described it in my last post still stands.

Another thing:

I would also try to change InDesign's preferences after they are rebuilt. Go to your InDesign Preferences in the GUI of InDesign and uncheck the following setting, that is enabled by default:

General > [  ] Show Homescreen When No Documents Are Open

Hii

Hii Thank you so much for helping out!  But this is what it looks like right now (See Screenshot please) I also can't find the Essenstials button when I click Window. So I still don't see any Side/Toolbars on both sides.

Kind Regards,
D

Try Window > Workspace > [Advanced] for example. And later, if you customize the dock of panels, save your own workspace with Window > Workspace > New Workspace

Hii Mike, I've tried what you've just said. When I press New workspace. The Touch workspace is still there. I don't know how to disable it. I also can't find the Essentials button. Kind regards,D

I think you're a little confused. You create a new workspace by modifying one that already exists, so when you select New Workspace InDesign expects you to have modified the workspace that is currently open and that you will save it with a new name.

What you want to do, as Mike tried to explain, is go to Window > Workspace > and choose a different workspace from the list. If, when you choose a worksapce from the list, the chosen space does not look as you expected you can go to Window > Workspace > Reset [the name of the open workspace] and it will revert to the last saved (named) configuration.

Mike has got your solution.
Just to add if you move things around to the way you like them, with different tool bars in different places ect, you can go Window > Workspace > New Workspace (near the bottom) - then you can name it. So if you ever lose something you can just reset to your preferred defaults.

Hii thank you so much for your reply, but unfortantly I'm still stuck. I now understand that it's a Touch workspace. But when I click Window> New workspace.. I still get the Touch workspace without the tool/side bars. Once again I'm just a beginner so I'm lost. Thank you for your help!
