Help, please - Indesign CS6 settings file location on Windows 10?

Hello!

I have to move from a Windows 7 PC to a new Windows 10 PC, wanting to move all my settings of ID as well. On Windows 7 they're stored where all the websites and this forum tell, in C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\Version [#], but not on Windows 10.

I searched the entire C: drive for "Indesign Defaults" file (hidden files shown, so everything would be searched). I created a new workspace with a unique name in order to find its name in a file name - no chance. I also searched the registry for the name of the workspace - nothing. But Indesign stores all settings when I close it.

Then I thought, maybe the updates found by the manager tool and installation of the Adobe CC main tool changed some path or whatever. Uninstalled everything, installed CS6 again from DVD, did no updates, started Indesign, changed some settings and created a new work space - still nothing there in \Roaming.

The only hint is a file called "Indesign SavedData" in the cache path, which changes all the time when closing ID.

Any idea? Thanks in advance.

Correct answer Doc Maik

Problem found and solved: my user folder is redirected (domain controlled PC), which means that only a part of the user data is on the system SSD. The redirection just had to be set to "Permanently offline available".

Hi,

interesting, but can you explain a bit more.

Mainly I'm a Mac user and only sometimes have to work with Windows.

So your user folder was redirected from the system disk to a disk on the network?

Does it work to see the folder that usually sits under AppData\Roaming\Adobe\ if you open the Scripts panel in InDesign, select User and right-click for "Show in Explorer"? Will it open the Scripts folder and what path does it show then?

Regards,
Uwe

In a local network, user folders can be redirected to server paths. It means, the actual user folder is on a server which is backed up daily, for higher data safety in case your hard drive fails. The user data could be restored within minutes on a new PC. The local user folder is only a shadow copy, either synchronised by a schedule or not at all.

In my case, all the data created by the Creative Suite installation and Indesign was on the server path, not yet synchronised with my system. But I of course looked there and when accessing the C: drive I only saw my local user folder while the server path is not directly accessible in Explorer, but only when opening the synch window. Once you found out, it's easy and logical.

Those are hidden by default, I believe so you have to enable the display of hidden files.

But do note that CS6 is not supported under Windows 10. Any issues and you will be on your own.

Thanks guys, but of course I'll let my TotalCommander show hidden files. The path \Adobe under \Roaming is empty.

@Eric: no appprefs.xml or the other file found.

Hi, I mentioned those files as I could see them in my install of Windows 10.

Hi,

I can see all my settings in C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\Version [#]\en_US folder. You might have some settings that hide this folder.

Can you run a search for AppPrefs.xml or advanced_CurrentWorkspace.xml  ?
