How edit multiples words in a paragraph

Community Beginner ,
Nov 04, 2019 Nov 04, 2019

Hi ... I'm looking for a way to select or combine multiple words in a paragraph and change, for example, different fonts, bold, italic or any style you want in one step. I know it's possible one by one, I just wonder if it is possible to do so by selecting more than one at a time in Indesign. It would be a great advance to have this option.

Hi,

This sounds lot like a use case for FindChangeByList sample script shipped with InDesign. The basic idea is that we create a list of find/change instructions in a text file, and then the script executes eack of those find/changes mentioned in the txt file on the InDesign document.

You can playaround with the sample to make it work. In short if you are able to achieve what you are trying to do using Find/Change dialog multiple times, then this script will percfectly work for you and make multiple changes with just a click of a button

In the scripts panel look for FindChangeByList.jsx and next to it will be a folder FindChangeSupport that has the text file FindChangeList.txt where you need to add the input for Find/Change, this text file also has instructions on how to add new find/change instruction in it

Use Character Styles. Use Paragraph Styles. Use Nested Styles. Use GREP Styles. Use Character Styles in Numbering and Bullets. Use Character Styles in Cross References. Use Character Styles in Footnotes’ and Endnotes’ references. Use Character Styles …

Hello! Very excellent answers my friends! Thank you very much for your prompt reply. But, I already knew those ... but you always have to go one by one, ... I mean change different words, titles, names of people watered by a whole paragraph, select them and change them to any style, without having to touch them one by one. I explain myself well? ... thanks!

I wish there was a way here to make some attachment of what I am saying in a photo or video.

If the words are consistent, that is if they are the same word or group of words, you could use GREP as part of your paragraph style.

Thanks for the help to make attachments, .. well, I created this image as if it were real, .. I only did a few reverses to show the idea I want. If I could select different words with my text tool and then select if I want them bold, italic, different color, etc. in one step Not one by one. this doesn't exist yet right?

If what you are talking about is non-contiguous selections of words, that is not an option that InDesign has. If it was always a certain list of words that needed this treatment, you could use GREP styles to automate the task.

Ok ..thanks.. I already saw a tutorial related to GREP STYLE but it doesn't help me ... I have to program all those actions annoys me.  At this point, the idea I say would help us quickly, changing color, style, size in one step in multiples word in a paragraph. Is it possible for someone from Adobe to look at this idea and realize it? .. it would be a great advance for indesign.

ps.

Well, if they do, please don't forget my royalties!

While it may not be exactly what you are looking for, creating Character styles with a keyboard shortcut assigned to each one would speed up your process. You could select a word, hit the shortcut, and then quickly select the next word that needed styling.

Hi Premier_Advertising,

I think, the next best thing you can do is using the Eyedropper Tool.

Pick up text formatting and apply it to every selection of text you are doing without changing the tool.

Hi! thank Uwe Laubender!...If it is what I use constantly! is that I hate changing tool word for word so much ... I have faith that they will make that improvement in the future ... thanks for the subjection! The multiple dropper has many aids even to create the colors of any element you work and add it to your color palette!

Another possible approach:

A script that can record your text selections with a Start and a Stop button. A third button that erases all recorded text selections.

Another script that applies format changes to the saved selections.

Both scripts must be developed; I'm not aware that scripts like that are already written.

Could be that it will cost some days for development and testing if it should work for all open documents and also drop selections from the record if a document is closed or changed ( text is edited, removed or added ).
