ID Strange Behavior Using Font Selection

First time using InDesign. However a little perplexed with the Font selections.

Created a line of text. In most applications I can peruse the different fonts by selecting the text, opening Type/Font then arrow down to view the text using the Font List.

ID is not allowing me to do this. Also font selection is not highlighting the font on the list. Appears to be above the Font Name?

Not sure if I need to remove ID and re-install?

Thanks

In looking for a common denominator between why PS font selection was normal and the others were not. Has to do with Workspace settings. Both were set on "Essentials" once I changed it to Typography in ID started working right.

Hi @westdr1dw:

It's always helpful to include your version of InDesign and your operating system when you ask us any question. That way we can tailor our response to your system.

Here's how this works on my Mac (Ventura 13.6.4) when I click on a typeface and tap the down arrow:

Hi @westdr1dw , Also, if you are using Type>Font to choose a font, make sure you select a style if more than 1 is available—if the font has multiple style choices there will be an arrow to the right of the font. In this example if I try to select just Museo Slab nothing will happen because there are 12 style options:

Thanks, for the response.

Upon closer look at how AI (Illustrator) is behaving and ID notice some similairties. However, PS behaves the way one would expect.

AI I am not able to peruse different fonts on the text from the Menu Bar. I can use the Properties Panel and apply various fonts on the selected text.  This is in contrast to what many users who use MS Office and Photoshop are accustomed to. The Font list on the Menu Bar is still wonky. Appears to ride above the Font Name. In all other apps aligns.

Thanks

I'm sure I'm misunderstanding your way of selecting fonts but to me it works identically in InDesign and Photoshop.

Then use the Control panel as @Barb Binder suggests

Ah. All three applications (InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator) ship with the Essentials workspace loaded, and this minimal workspace is specifically designed not to intimidate a brand new user by displaying too many panels on screen.

Photoshop's version of the Essentials workspace includes the Options bar which sits just under the Menu bar (hide/show it with Window > Options). InDesign and Illustrator call the same bar the Control panel, but it is not part of the Essentials workspace. With any workspace loaded, you can hide/show the Control panel in InDesign and Illustrator using Window > Control. You do not need to change workspace to show the Control panel. .

You can learn more about InDesign workspaces here:

Thank you Barb. I am discovering new things along the way. Not sure if a pop up would be of value to inform them when they are in essentials mode. However, once you discover the limitations when in a Workspace . . .

You are very welcome, @westdr1dw.

I teach how to design a custom workspace in the first hour of all my intro classes—in all three applications. I think workspaces are important.

FWIW, I put my new students into InDesign's Advanced workspace immediately (which includes the Control panel) and then we add/organize the other panels that we will be using.

Glad you got it figured out. Come back to see us next time you get stuck.
