Indesign file printing in grayscale

So we've updated our equipment and moved to the Adobe CC programs. Everything is fine other than when I try to print anything out of Indesign, the copy is grayscale instead of in color. The print dialogue all looks normal for it to print color and when I export a .pdf it is in color and will print in color from Illustrator or Photoshop. What gives on Indesign files? If it's useful, the printer is a Konica Minolta bizhub C554.

Most strongly recommend exporting PDF/X-4 from InDesign and print the resultant PDF file from Acrobat. Let us know if that resolves the problem or not.

The resulting pdf file does print in color. So at least I have a work around until I can figure out why the indd files are printing grayscale. If it helps, I went ahead and reinstalled to print driver to see if that would fix the problem and it didn't - still printing grayscale out of Indesign and I found that Preview is also printing in gray, while Acrobat, Photoshop, and Illustrator are printing in color.

CORRECTION: Preview is printing fine now - it had a box check to print grayscale. Indesign is still printing without color.

Since your ID settings are good, check the Page Setup option in the Print dialog box. These settings can override ID's settings. If the setting (for grayscale in this case) was ever changed for a job--possibly in a different program--it can be a "sticky" setting and still be active.

I have this strange behavior sometime. This is InDesign, a program for doing books, but not for printing them (so many bugs). Prefer always to do export to PDF and only then print from Acrobat something for "good" print. InDesign direct print is only for some drafts. My strong IMHO.

Remember, never say you can't do something in InDesign, it's always just a question of finding the right workaround to get the job done. © David Blatner

Your printer dialogue shows you're using a "Ricoh Pro C7100" PostScript Printer Description (PPD). Which is also a color printer, but the communication might be incorrect for a Konica printer. Look for the Konica model in the popup menu !

Sorry – misinterpretation of one post – my bad...

Hi Peter,

That's Bill's screenshot, not the OP's.

Oops – silly me !

Thanks for catching...

On track again:

I checked the Konica printer's specifications and it supports the PostScript 3 (CPSI 3016) PDL. So InDesign should be able to communicate with it. The printer is also very PDF-savvy, so I expect no problems, no structural lack or incapability at the printer's side, which leaves it to be an ill-behaving setting or bug...

A test with a print-out of a simple new document with some colourful content would help, to find out whether there's something wrong with the content of the file the OP is trying to print, or InDesign itself ?

Check in the Output section of InDesign's Print dialog window under "Color:". If it says Composite Gray then change it to "Composite CMYK".

It says composite CMYK and the Color Management is set to let Indesign manage colors.

what do you see when check Separations preview? Could you share a screenshot with this panel open in Separations mode?

Have you tried restoring Indesign preferences?

I tried and it's still printing in grayscale.
